Caleb Smith, age 16, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on Monday, September 29, 2014, in rural Storm Lake, Iowa.

Caleb Christopher John Smith, a son of Jenny and Chris, was born in Storm Lake, Iowa, on November 7, 1997. Currently a junior at Sioux Central High School, he lived with his mother, stepfather, and two sisters in Sioux Rapids.

While in school, Caleb participated in wrestling, 4-H, and weight training. In addition to his high school studies, he was also taking college classes through Iowa Central Community College to become a mechanic.

Everyone who knew Caleb remembers him as an avid hunter and fisherman. He valued his family and treasured the time he spent these past three years with his step dad, Dan, as well as with his Grandpa Jim, Grandpa John, and his friends. In addition, Caleb valued the knowledge he gained from his uncle, Makoto. He loved the grandma kisses he received from his Grandma Mary. A big brother to his sisters, Shelby and Chloe, who knew him as “Co-Co,” he had fun not only teasing them but also his cousins and his aunts. He enjoyed eating out and going to the movies with Shelby as well as putting on scary masks for Chloe. A Denver Broncos fan, he, also, had fun playing various types of board games. Caleb’s favorite quote was “You mess with the bull, you get the horns.” His dog, Matty, will be remembered as his best friend.

Caleb’s memory is loved and celebrated by his family which includes his parents, Jenny Smith and Dan Van Iperen, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; his sisters, Shelby and Chloe, of Sioux Rapids; his half-brother and half-sister, Brandon and Nicole Smith, of Ayrshire, Iowa; and his grandparents, John and Mary Smith, of Linn Grove, Iowa, and Jim and Laurie Van Iperen, of Hartley, Iowa; as well as his many aunts, uncles, cousins, classmates, and friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 3, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids. Burial will follow in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. Visitation with the family present will take place Thursday, October 2, 2014, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.

Tragic Head-on Collision Claims Two Teenage Lives

An accident between a passenger car and a pickup truck occurred at about 10:45 in the morning at the crest of a hill on a gravel road, 570th Street, a half mile east of county road M50. Both victims were traveling in the passenger car and were pronounced dead at the scene. Killed were the driver, Caleb Smith, 17, of Sioux Rapids, and a passenger, Lexi Rydstrom, 16, of Marathon. Two other passengers in the car were transported to area hospitals. The driver of the pickup truck sustained only minor injuries, but his passenger suffered more serious ones. No charges are expected in the incident (Storm Lake Pilot Tribune, 29 Sep 2014).
