Shirley JoAnn Dankel Anderson, 85, was born on July 20, 1929, in Carroll, Iowa, to William and Julia Hazel (Ewart) Dankel. She died on October 6, 2014, at the Edgewater Retirement Community in West Des Moines.

In 1946, she graduated from Glidden Consolidated School and in 1948, from Iowa State Teacher’s College. She taught kindergarten in Sac City and Eagle Grove and a class of four primary grades in Wesley.

JoAnn married John B. Anderson in Lake View, Iowa, on August 24, 1952. She and John owned newspapers in Britt and Storm Lake. They had three daughters, Elizabeth, Krista, and Janet.

JoAnn was the ultimate homemaker and volunteer. In Britt, she volunteered with the Girl Scouts, the Sunday School and Vacation Bible School programs, and the Methodist Church education committee. In addition, she served as Community Chest secretary, library board chair, and hospital auxiliary newsletter editor.

At the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, she served on the pastor-parish relations board, on the education committee, with the United Methodist Women, and as a trustee. In addition, she helped out with the Sunday School and Vacation Bible School programs, the financial drives, and the lay visitation program. Involved with Republican Women, she served as Buena Vista County Republican election headquarters chair in 1968. Moreover, she held numerous offices in P.E.O., chapter JD, including president. Other Storm Lake volunteer work included the Buena Vista County Hospital Auxiliary, the Community Chest, the Girl Scouts, Hospice, the golf boards at the Storm Lake Municipal Golf Course and Lake Creek Country Club, and the Methodist Manor, where she gave manicures for more than twenty-five years. In addition, she served on the district library board for Northwest Iowa, as golf chair when Lake Creek hosted the IWGA State Tournament, as Volunteer Service League chairman, as Meals on Wheels board member and delivery person, and as homeroom mother.

She liked to golf, read, garden, bake, sew, travel, bird-watch, eat lemon pie and chocolate, spend winters in Arizona, and live on the lake at Storm Lake.

In 2011, Jo and John moved to the Edgewater Retirement Community in West Des Moines.

JoAnn is survived by her husband John; her daughters, Elizabeth Anderson (Loren Kruse), of Ankeny, Krista (Guy) Packard, of Holland, Michigan, and Janet (Steve) Fry, of West Des Moines; her brother, Berkeley Dankel, of Lake View; and her grandchildren: Chris Packard, of St. Joseph, Michigan, John Kruse, of Manhattan, Kansas, Erin Fry, of Ames, Anne Packard, of West Lafayette, Indiana, Kate Kruse, of Ames, and Kyra Fry, Fort Worth, Texas; as well as by her nieces and nephews.
