Lois D. Adams, age 95, of Albert City, Iowa, died on Saturday, September 27, 2014, at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City, Iowa.

Lois Darlyn Adams was born in Albert City, Iowa, on August 31, 1919, the third child of Jesse Yocum and Yarda (Evaline) Adams.

Confirmed on June 2, 1935, when Reverend Arthur Peterson was the Pastor of the Evangelical Free Church, she attended the Albert City schools for twelve years, graduating with the class of 1937.

After her father died, the family moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, where she worked for Swanson’s Food Store and for the Daily Advertiser, a shopper delivered door-to-door throughout the city. Later, she moved to Beresford, South Dakota. There, she worked for her sister, Gail, and her husband, Bo Nichols. They owned and edited the local paper, the Beresford Republic. A lino-typist, she, also, operated a press.

While she was living in Beresford, the Second World War began. Thereupon, Lois enlisted in the Marine Corps in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She served in the transportation division from April 1943 until April 1946, driving a semi-tractor trailer on base and to various cities. While in the Marines, she, also, played on the base softball team and on the bowling team.

Discharged from the Marines in 1946, Lois moved to Stowe, Pennsylvania, where she worked at Stanley Flaggs for nine years. She, also, worked weekends at the local airport where she took flying lessons and earnned her pilot’s license. Moreover, during this time, she enjoyed playing softball in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Indeed, their team won the state tournament and played in the world tournament in Portland, Oregon.

After moving to Telford, Pennsylvania, Lois worked for twelve years for the American Olean Tile Company, located in Lansdale. In addition, she refereed girls’ high school and college basketball.

In 1967, she returned to Albert City to care for her mother. Not idle for long, she umpired high school softball for several years and became the caretaker of the cemetery. A job she held for twelve years, and as usual, she did a fantastic job.

The Albert City Schools, also, employed Lois for thirty-five years. She served in various capacities. While driving one of the buses, she became the good friend of the pupils who rode her bus. Moreover, she did the laundry and worked the lunchroom before retiring in 2002.

Next, Lois helped out at the Senior Center. In later years, she became a “driver” for various women in the community, taking them to doctor’s appointments, to the beauty shop, to the stores, and to and from the hospital among other destinations. She enjoyed being able to help them. In addition, she loved animals and dog sat for many dogs while their owners were vacationing elsewhere.

She lived a very full life and enjoyed being of service to the people in Albert City. Lois loved to cook and bake, especially caramels and lemon pies. The good things she prepared she shared willingly with her neighbors and friends.

Lois was preceded in death by her father, Jesse Yocum Adams, in 1935; her mother, Yarda Evaline Adams-Ray, in 1979; her brothers, Roland L. Adams and James Adams; her sister, Gail Adams-Nichols; her brother-in-law, James Scott; her sister-in-law, Lois M. Adams; and her step-father, Forest Ray.

Lois leaves to mourn her passing a sister, Mary Jane Adams-Scott, of Loomis, California, and her sister-in-law, Janet Adams; as well as six nieces, two nephews, many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews; and several cousins.

Funeral services will be held Monday, September 29, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. Burial will follow in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
