July 22, 1925 - July 6, 2014

Doris Pitzen, age 88, of Newell, Iowa, died on July 6, 2014, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell.

Doris Eileen Osweiler was born on July 22, 1925, in Pocahontas, Iowa, a daughter of William and Priscilla (Pieffer) Osweiler.

Baptized and confirmed at St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church in Varina, Iowa, Doris attended country school in Pocahontas County and graduated from Pocahontas High School. She was also very active in 4-H in her youth.

On November 11, 1942, Doris married Philip M. Pitzen at St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church in Varina. In due course, they were blessed with three children: Mary, Joseph, and Philip.

Following their wedding while Phil was in the service, they resided in Colorado. Later, they moved to Clinton, Iowa. Then, in 1945, they moved to Pocahontas. For the next 49 years, Doris and Phil resided on their farm between Newell and Storm Lake where they farmed and raised their family. The next ten years after they retired, they spent at their condominium in Storm Lake.

A member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Doris was very active in the church guild.

In her spare time, Doris liked to dance, bake, and help out on the farm. Always ready to play cards, she belonged to several bridge clubs over the years. She and Phil travelled extensively throughout their lives. Indeed, they enjoyed many European and Alaskan trips. Doris valued her family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Mary Proctor, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Philip Pitzen, and his wife, Joan Skogstrom, of Des Moines, Iowa; her grandchildren: Christopher, Angela, Matthew, Joshua, Susan, and Jacob; and her great-grandchildren: Marcus, John, Tom, Kathryn, Sarah, Susan, Jacob, Tanner, Elizabeth, Grace, Mattie, Joseph, and Lauren; as well as extended family members and friends.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Philip; her son, Joseph, in 1965; and her brothers: Donald, Lyle, James, and Kenneth.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 11, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake.
