Richard Lee Sutherland, a son of Donald and Gertrude (Kiley) Sutherland, was born on December 17, 1949, in Waukegan, Illinois. He spent his childhood years in Illinois and his summers in Dickens, Iowa, with his grandparents. He attended St. Anne’s Catholic School and Barrington High School in Barrington, Illinois.

Rick married Marcie Ann (Wright) on January 23, 1970, in Woodstock, Illinois. To this union one child, Jason Thomas Sutherland, was born on July 20, 1970. On July 30, 1988, he married Deanne (Dee) Weier.

Rick was an over-the-road truck driver for several companies in Iowa and Minnesota for over twenty-eight years. An avid golfer, he enjoyed everyone he met at the Spencer Municipal Golf Course and the Spencer Golf and Country Club. When he wasn’t out golfing, he liked spending time with his family (pretty much winter months only). He also enjoyed watching the Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks, and Cubs. In addition, he loved listening to music of the 60s and 70s while out on the open road. After so many years living in a city environment, he enjoyed country life. Indeed, he spent many hours watching wildlife on the acreage he and Dee owned.

Surrounded by his loving family, Rick passed away at the age of 59 on December 11, 2009, at his home in Spencer. He was preceded in death by his father; his brother, Bill; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Dee, of Spencer, Iowa; his son, Jason, and his wife, Cheryl, of Carol Stream, Illinois; his mother, Trudy, of Spencer, Iowa; his brother, Jerry, and his wife, Joanie, of Ruthven, Iowa; several special family members: A.J., Dixie, Tasha, Ty, Cassie, Autumn, and Keyshawn; and three step-children: Eve, Jeff, and Teresa; as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren; other relatives; and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 16, 2009, at the Warner Chapel in Spencer, Father William Schreiber officiating. Pall Bearers: Jason Sutherland, Jerry Sutherland, James Sutherland, A.J. Jackson, Ty Jackson, Josh Kephart. Honorary Bearers: Scott Wren, Joe Rexroat, Scott Rexroat. Visitation will begin after 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, with the family present from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday evening, at the funeral home. Music: "Wind Beneath My Wings," "Unchained Melody." Interment: Newell Cemetery Newell, Iowa. There will be a lunch at the Webb Community Center in Webb, following the burial.
