Pasadena, Texas

Merlin O. Sjoberg, age 81, of Pasadena, Texas, passed away on Friday, March 28, 2014, at the Bayshore Medical Center of Pasadena, Texas.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 03, 2014, at 2:00 PM at the Scandinavian Cemetery of Alta with the Rev. Don E. Rothweiler officiating. Burial will take place at the Scandinavian Cemetery of Alta. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta.

Merlin Olof Sjoberg was born to Olof and Annie (Berggren) Sjoberg on February 8, 1933, at Albion Nebraska. Baptized at Salem Lutheran Church in rural St. Edward, Nebraska, and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Newman Grove, Nebraska, he attended school in Newman Grove through the 10th grade before transferring to Luther Junior College and Academy in Wahoo Nebraska, graduating from the college in 1953. He, then, attended Midland College in Fremont Nebraska.

During the Korean Conflict, he enlisted in the U S Army and following his honorable discharge, he continued his education at Dana College, Blair Nebraska. He, then, attended Central Lutheran Theological Seminary, Fremont, Nebraska, graduating in 1965. On December 16, 1966, he was ordained as a pastor in the Nebraska Synod of the Lutheran Church of America.

Merlin married Marion Kramer on June 3, 1966, in Omaha, Nebraska. He served congregations in Nebraska, Missouri, and for many years in Pennsylvania. After retiring in 1995, he moved to Pasadena, Texas, where he and his wife became members of Peace Lutheran Church. Merlin continued serving his Lord as interim pastor for several Texas congregations, and he visited the shut ins at his new church home until his health failed. He went to be with his Lord on March 28, 2014.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and six brothers-in-law. He is survived by a sister, Lucille DeFoil; a step-daughter, Karen Blackshear, and her husband, Joe; two step-sons, Charles Kramer, and his wife, Helene, and David Kramer, and his wife, Deb; one nephew, Dan Albert, and his wife, Keryl; three nieces, Cynthia Heier, Sandra Albert, Diane Leeder, and her husband, Michael; and two sisters-in-law, Beverly Henkeldey [sic]. . . .
