Bernardo Chavez, age 25, of Des Moines, Iowa, and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Sunday, April 6, 2014, in Des Moines.

Bernardo Juan Chavez was born on September 26, 1988, in Torrance, California, the son of Maria Mendoza and Juan Chavez. Growing up, Bernardo attended South Elementary School and then Storm Lake High School.

A huge Iowa Hawkeye fan, Bernardo also loved to write music and rap. He recorded many songs. Looking up to him, his nephews wanted to be able to sing and sell music just like their uncle.

Bernardo had two children, Dominic and Damian, whom he loved deeply along the other members of his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Damian Chavez (3 years old) and Dominic Chavez (8 years old); his mother, Maria D. Mendoza, his father, Juan M. Chavez, his brother, Juan M. Chavez, Jr., of Storm Lake, Iowa, his sisters, Marta (Jorge) Sandoval, and Joanna Chavez, all of Storm Lake, Iowa, as well as Jannette Chavez, of Des Moines, Iowa; his niece, Jessica Sandoval, and his nephews, Jorge Sandoval, Jr., Manny Chavez, and Mauricio Leon, as well as extended family and friends.

Bernardo was preceded in death by his grandmother, Martha Ramirez, and his cousin, Hugo Ramirez.

Visitation: 4:00-8:00 p.m., April 10, 2014, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m., April 11, 2014, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Interment: April 11, 2014, at the Storm Lake Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa
