Allen Bernhard Romo of Albert City, Iowa, died on March 10, 2014, at the age of 73.

Allen Romo, son of Arnold and Berdella (Berg) Romo, was born in Pine Island, Minnesota, on November 18, 1940, where he spent his youth on the family dairy farm. He graduated from Pine Island High School in 1958.

In 1959, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country for four years. Stationed on the USS Hornet during the Viet Nam police action and on the USS Iwo Jima at the Bay of Pigs during the Cuban Missile Crisis, he was honorably discharged at grade E-5 in 1963.

On April 20, 1963, Allen married Lynne Dianne Stark in Upland, California. They spent their early married years in Ontario, California, where they lovingly welcomed their son, Todd Allen, on April 13, 1964, and their daughter, Kristi Lynne, on January 30, 1966. In 1970, they moved to Austin, Minnesota, where Al worked as an insurance agent for seven years, and then to Albert City, Iowa, in 1977, where Al was employed by the Albert City Savings Bank. He retired from his position as Vice President in 2003. During those years, Al participated in Kiwanis, the Lions Club, and the Chamber of Commerce as well as serving on the Industrial Development Committee. He continued his affiliation with the American Legion throughout his life. He served Our Savior’s Lutheran Church as a board member, and, with Lynne, was a Luther League sponsor for several years. From 1990 to 1991, Al and Lynne again became new parents to a daughter, Lisa Martin, an AFS Exchange Student from Mira, Italy. A loving relationship continues to this day.

Allen enjoyed camping, fishing, golfing, gardening, cooking, and reading. For many years, he enjoyed organizing an annual 3-day fishing holiday for his extended family. They were memorable occasions.

Al’s steadfast courage will remain an inspiration to us always, and his life will lovingly be remembered and cherished by his family: Lynne, his wife of fifty years; his son, Todd, and his wife, Lori Romo, their son, Justin, of Albert City, Iowa, and their daughter, Jessica, and her husband, Robbie Sauter, of Sioux City, Iowa; his daughter, Kristi, and her husband, Bruce Blomberg, and their daughters, Isabella, Alexandra, and Elizabeth, of Cumming, Iowa; his siblings: Iva Mae Anderson and her family, of Chatfield, Minnesota, Charlene Borgstrom and her family, of North Saint Paul, Minnesota, and Dean Romo and his family, of Pine Island, Minnesota; as well as by many other family members and lifelong friends.

Allen is preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Berdella Romo; his brother, Gene Romo; and his sister, Bonnie Kunz.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albert City, Iowa. Burial will be at a later date at Lands Lutheran Church Cemetery in Zumbrota, Minnesota. Visitation will take place on Friday, March 14, 2014, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
