Hugh Q. Sharp
July 04, 1918 - February 10, 2014

Elkhorn, Iowa

Hugh Quentin Sharp, age 95, of Atlantic, Iowa, and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on February 10, 2014, at the Salem Nursing Home in Elkhorn, Iowa.

Hugh was born on July 4, 1918, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the fourth child of Rae E. and Letta Rose (Dyer) Sharp. After graduating from Storm Lake High School in 1938, he served in the Army Air Corp during World War II (1941-1945). While in the military, he was awarded three Overseas Bars, European, African, and Middle Eastern ribbons with four Bronze Battles Stars, an American Campaign Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, and a World War II Victory Medal. Very proud of his military service, he had many stories to tell about his wartime experiences.

After the war, Hugh worked maintenance at Buena Vista University, the Methodist Manor, and then at the Buena Vista County Hospital for seventeen and a half years. On October 6, 1946, he married Gladys Marie Grote at Zion Lutheran Church in Grant Township, Iowa. They enjoyed outdoor activities: fishing and camping around the lakes region with their friends, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. This past July, he marked his ninety-fifth birthday with a baseball game, fireworks, and a picnic. Many family members and friends attended to help him celebrate this milestone.

An avid St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeyes fan, Hugh also enjoyed playing dominoes with his family and watching John Wayne movies. He also played piano and sang beautifully. Most importantly, however, he had a great love for his family and spending time with them.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Rae and Letta; his wife, Gladys; and his siblings, Lou Sharp, Rae (Jack) Sharp, and Mattie Overholser.

He is survived by his sister, Mavis Curtis, of Ohio; his children, Gloria Montross and Jim, of Houston, Texas, Dr. Robert Sharp and Denise, of Atlantic, Iowa, Dr. Linda Sharp, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Rev. Jean Morse and Larry, of Cherokee, Iowa; his grandchildren, Anna Demoplis and Artie; Jamie Hayes and Brian; Katie Sharp; Kelsi Shields and Andrew; Samantha Renfro, and her fiancé, Neal Pruess; Karl and Kasey Renfro; Andrew and Amy Morse; and Hillary Morse, and her fiancé, Anthony Sigaty; and his great-grandchildren, Curtis, Alexina, Aidan, Camille, and one due in August; as well as by many other relatives and friends.
