Ricky Lee Schmidt, age 59, of Alta, passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2014, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center of Storm Lake.

Ricky was born on July 19, 1954, to Alvina and Willard Schmidt in Storm Lake, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church where he became a lifelong member, he attended school until the 8th grade at St. John’s Lutheran School in Hanover. In 1972, he graduated from Alta High School where he was a member of FFA.

After completing high school, Rick started working at HyGrade, but he loved farming more. Consequently, he spent his adult life farming with his father and especially enjoying the harvest. In addition, he helped tile for Paul Koth at Koth Construction for several years. In 1995, his brother, Ryan, joined him in the farming operation when their father retired. The brothers continued farming together until the present. In his spare time, Rick enjoyed cheering on Dale Ernhardt, Jr., while watching NASCAR each racing Sunday.

Rick was preceded in death by his mother, Alvina. His survivors include his father, Willard Schmidt, of Alta; his sisters, Janet (Tim) Black, of Sioux City, Iowa, and Brenda (Dan) Anderson, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and his brother, Ryan (Carrie) Schmidt, of Alta, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at 10:30 AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church of rural Alta (Hanover) with the Rev. John H. Schmidt officiating. Burial will be at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery of rural Alta (Hanover). A visitation will be held on Monday, February 17, 2014, from 4:00–8:00 PM with the family present from 6:00–8:00 PM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta.
