Lois Hatlelid, age 81, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Friday, February 21, 2014, while vacationing in Palm Springs, California.

Lois Darlene Huston was born in Benson, Minnesota, on September 23, 1932, the daughter of Willard and Minnie (Wagner) Huston. Growing up, Lois attended school in Bensen, graduating in 1950. Then, she furthered her education by attending the Normal Training School at Glenwood, Minnesota, for one year. After receiving her teaching certificate, she taught at a country school for a few years.

On August 6, 1955, Lois married Howard Hatlelid at West Bank Lutheran Church in rural Swift County, Minnesota. They were, subsequently, blessed with three daughters: Lori, Jodi, and Jane.

Active in her community, Lois participated in the Hospital Auxiliary and SERPACI. She was a former member of PEO. A longtime member of the Alta Church of Christ in Alta, Iowa, she and Howard participated in Bible study groups as well.

Most of all, Lois loved spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and playing cards. An exceptional cook and a very talented at seamstress, she also had a talent for making greeting cards. In addition, she enjoyed tending her flower garden, taking early morning walks, and driving convertibles.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Howard Hatlelid, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her children: Lori (Marc) Burkhart, of New Ulm, Minnesota, Jodi (Mark) Reilly, of Jeffersonville, Indiana, and Jane (David) Allard, of Owatonna, Minnesota; her grandchildren: Matthew, Nathan (Katie), Devin, and Jordan Burkhart; Morgan and Jack Reilly; and Benjamin, Nicholas (Katie), and Jessie Allard; her great-grandchild, Avery Burkhart; and her brothers: Richard Huston, of Faribault, Minnesota, and Randall (Beth) Huston, of Huntsville, Missouri; as well as extended family members and friends.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Gerald Huston; and her sisters-in-law, Bea and Glenda Huston.

Memorial Service: 10:30 a.m., February 26, 2014, at the United Church of Christ in Alta, Iowa.
Visitation: 5:00-8:00 p.m., February 25, 2014, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Memorials are preferred to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Women’s Auxiliary Nurse Scholarship Fund.
