August 15, 1940 - December 30, 2013

Alta, Iowa

Robert “Bob” Eugene Pender, age 73, of Alta, Iowa, died on December 30, 2013, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Bob Pender was born on August 15, 1940, in Storm Lake Iowa, the son of Arthur and Marjorie (Brisbois) Pender. Baptized at the Methodist Church in Schaller, Iowa, in 1940, he also attended school in Schaller, graduating in 1959. In 1964, he married Ann Kirby, with whom he became the proud father of two children, Sallie and Shane.

Growing up on a farm, Bob had many humorous experiences, especially with the Naberhaus boys. Some of the highlights included: taking a trip down the Missouri River with Roger Wiese to New Orleans (They got as far as Decatur, Nebraska.), riding in the forty horse hitch in Zearing, Iowa, working a year building the new windmills in Alta, making trips to Las Vegas, working in the oilfields out west, driving courier routes, and transporting residents at Wel-Life.

After returning to Alta, Bob became the petroleum manager at AgLand Co-Op. On February 2, 1980, he married Karen Underwood at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Thereby, he acquired two step-sons, Ron and Brian, who loved him like a dad. They spent twenty-one years operating the Depot Steakhouse, acquiring many memories along the way.

Very active in his community, Bob served on the Buena Vista County Fair Board as well as on his and church board. Moreover, he joined the Alta Fire Department, the Masonic Lodge, and the Chamber of Commerce. The chief inviter to the “alone” people to the big Depot Thanksgiving meals, he offered them his famous prime rib and barbeque rib dinners.

A very busy and unique man, Bob loved to make people laugh. His hobbies included raising rabbits, planting one hundred pounds of potatoes for the Depot, working in his shop, and growing sunflowers.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Karen Pender, of Alta, Iowa; his children, Sallie (John) Fitzpatrick, of Peterson, Iowa, Shane (special friend, Hayley), of Kansas City, Missouri, Ron Underwood, of Platte City, Missouri, and Brian Underwood, of Alta, Iowa; his brothers, Lloyd (Lynn) Pender, of Saginaw, Michigan, and Thomas Pender, of Eldridge, Iowa; his grandchildren: Jadeyn Pender, of Peterson, Iowa, Taylor Campbell, of Medford, Oregon, Jamison (Courtney) Underwood, of Coalville, Iowa, and Sara Underwood, of Hampton, Iowa; his great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Emily Underwood; and his sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Norm) Peterson, of Ames, Iowa, Rose Mallison, of Gowrie, Iowa, LuAnn (Jim) Suchan, of Gowrie, Iowa, and Mary Anderson, of Las Vegas, Nevada; as well as many cousins, nephews, nieces; extended family, and friends.
