Max Zinn
November 5, 1929 - March 10, 2005

Max Zinn, age 75, of Storm Lake lost his courageous ten-year battle with pulmonary fibrosis on Thursday, March 10, 2005, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Max Irwin Zinn was born on November 5, 1929, to Fred and Velma Zinn on the family farm south of Storm Lake. He lived with his parents there, and attended Providence Consolidated School.

On May 13, 1951, Max enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, proudly serving for six months. His tour, however, was shortened because of a tragedy resulting in a hardship discharge to help on the family farm. His father had been critically injured in an automobile accident, which left him with a permanent disability. Nonetheless, Max continued serving in the Air Force Reserves until his discharge on January 11, 1956.

Baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Max, later, transferred his membership to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake.

Max wed Ardyce Joyce Ness in the Witter Chapel of the United Methodist Church on November 10, 1957. To this union, four children were born: Dan, Doug, Stephanie and Sara.

For twenty-six years, Max worked for HyGrade Food Products until the plant closed. At the same time, he continued farming his family's home place. He enjoyed reading, especially WWII and aviation history, attending Air Shows of World War Vintage Aircraft, and restoring his classic car. More than all else, however, he loved his family the most. He will forever be remembered as a faithful husband and a loving father and grandfather. He especially cherished his time with his granddaughters.

Survivors include his wife, Ardyce, of Storm Lake; his sons: Dan Zinn, of Early, and Douglas Zinn, of Storm Lake, and his very special friend, Danelle Johannsen, of Holstein; his daughters: Stephanie Zinn, of Sac City, and her very special friend, Royce Kemmann, of Sac City, and Sara Heit, and her husband, Craig, of Apple Valley, Minnesota; his grandchildren: Emma and Greta Heit, also of Apple Valley, Minnesota; and his sister, Phyllis Barber, of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota; as well as other extended family members and friends.

Preceding Max in death were his parents and his brother-in-law, Orval Barber.

Funeral services for Max Zinn were held on Sunday, March 13, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Connie Spitzack officiating. Burial was in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake.
