Joseph W. Wagner, age 81, of Alta, passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2013, at the Sunset Knoll Care and Rehabilitation Center of Aurelia.

Joseph William Wagner was born on May 31, 1932, to Joseph and Mary (Kelch) Wagner in Cicero, Illinois. As a young boy, Joe worked as a hired hand in Kanawha. On July 31, 1957, he married Jeanette Munz in the rectory of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. To this union five children were born.

After their marriage, he and Jeanette moved to Estherville where Joe worked at Fogery Construction. From 1961 to 1965, the family lived in Bancroft, Iowa. There, Joe worked for the city pouring and maintaining the city streets. The family, then, moved to Alta, where he lived out his life, working at the Alta Lumber and U.B.C. until he retired.

A gentle and quiet man, Joe valued his family. He enjoyed people watching and seemed to know someone wherever he went.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Todd; a brother, Larry Wagner; his mother- and father-in-law, Grace and Russell Paulson; a sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and Harold Peterson; and a niece, Kathy Fahr.

Joe is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Jeanette Wagner, of Alta; his son, Jeff Wagner, of Rathdrum, Idaho; his daughters, Kimberly Halmose, and her husband, Tom, of Ansonia, Connecticut, Kristy Wagner, of Alta, Polly Sleezer, and her husband, Patrick, of San Antonio, Texas, and Peggy Witzke, and her husband, James, of Fonda; eleven grandchildren, Joseph and Timothy Halmose; Zachary, Kolby, and Jaden Sleezer; Ely, Jake, and Corey Wagner; Sarah Wilson; and Caylee and Chandler Witzke; and seven great-grandchildren, Orion, Torrin, Rory, Jillian, Charlie, Ellie, and Evan; as well as by many nieces and nephews not to mention his granddogs, Max, Tanner, Riley, and Beau.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2013, at 10:30 AM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta with the Rev. D. Duane Olson officiating. Burial will be at the Scandinavian Cemetery of Alta. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 18, 2013, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta.
