Dorothy M. Winterhof, age 91, of Alta, passed away on Friday, December 20, 2013, at the Sunset Knoll Care and Rehabilitation Center of Aurelia.

Dorothy Marion (Otto) was born on February 5, 1922, to Henry H. and Anna (Miller) Otto. Baptized on February 19, 1922, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Alta (Hanover), by Pastor Henry Wehking and confirmed there as well on March 31, 1935, by Pastor Otto Bahr, she attended St. John’s Lutheran School through the 8th grade. As a young lady, Dorothy helped at home and then worked in Chicago and in various area homes as a housekeeper and child care provider.

Dorothy married Harry Winterhof on June 29, 1941. They farmed for forty-two years in the Hanover area. For over twenty years, she enjoyed quilting with her many friends that she had met at St. John’s School. She was also an active member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League at St. John’s.

Dorothy will be remembered for her love of family and friends, her kind-heartedness, her baking and quilting, and her love of flowers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; her parents; two brothers; and one sister.

Dorothy is survived by her three sons, Loren (Mary), of Jackson, Missouri, Roger (Janis), of Urbandale, Iowa, and Delbert (Cheryl), of Aurelia, Iowa; two daughters, Gaylene (Larry) Harms, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Sondra (David) Mercier, of Denver, Colorado; her grandchildren, Melanie (Steve) Smith, Chad Winterhof, Ryan (Lee) Harms, Rachel (Mike) Fanning, Halli Winterhof, and Rhianna Mercier; her great-grandchildren, Gabe and Abbie Harms; her brothers, Arnold (Norma) Otto, of Albert City, Iowa, and Marvin (Lorraine) Otto, of Alta, Iowa; her sister, LaVonne Sievers, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Orville (Iona) Winterhof, of Aurelia, Iowa, and Vernon (Suzanne) Winterhof, also of Aurelia, Iowa.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church of rural Alta (Hanover) with Rev. John H. Schmidt officiating. Burial will take place at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery of rural Alta (Hanover). Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 24, 2013, one hour prior to services at the church.
