Verna B. Olson, age 76, of Albert City, Iowa, died on September 26, 2013, at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Verna B. Kruse was born on August 30, 1937, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Hattie (Brummer) and Fred Kruse. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Newell, Iowa.

Growing up, Verna attended a country school where she was lucky enough to have her future Aunt Ardyce as her first grade teacher. She went on to graduate from Albert City High School in 1955.

On April 1, 1956, Verna married Roger Olson at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church near Newell. They were blessed with two children: Kevin and Kathy.

An active member of the St. John’s United Church of Christ in rural Newell, Verna served on the board and belonged to the ladies circle. Currently, she was attending the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell.

Verna loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She worked at the local grocery store in Albert City before retiring. She enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and, especially, shopping with her sisters. She cherished many special memories of social gatherings with her neighbors in her apartment complex and was looking forward to making new memories at her new apartment. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Kevin (Nancy) Olson, of Prior Lake, Minnesota, and Kathy (Tim) Heuton, of Albert City, Iowa; her grandchildren: Jodi (Carl) Peterson, Tim Walton, and Jake (Alicia), Tyler (Stephanie), and Dallas Heuton; her great grandchildren: Kyle and Alyssa Peterson and Chase and Kade Heuton; her brothers: Rollie (Ardyce) and Roger (Jane) Kruse, all of Albert City, Iowa; her sister, Jeanette Boese, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and her sister-in-law, Carol (Dr. Arlo) Samuelson, of Laurens, Iowa; as well as extended family members and friends.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roger; an infant brother; her sister, Geneva Betz; her brothers-in-law, Phil Betz and Kenneth Boese; and her parents-in-law, Gust and Florence Olson.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 30, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albert City. Burial will be in St. John’s United Church of Christ Cemetery in rural Newell, Iowa. Visitation will take place on Sunday, September 29, 2013, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
