Storm Lake, Iowa

Helen Mileham, age 92, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Friday, September 20, 2013, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Helen Jenora Johnson was born on February 14, 1921, in Albert City, Iowa, the daughter of G. A. David (Dave) and Ella (Dahlstrom) Johnson. She attended school in Albert City, graduating from Albert City High School with the class of 1939.

On February 8, 1941, Helen married W. Lyle Mileham at the United Methodist Church in Spencer, Iowa. They were blessed with five children: Lana, Sharon, Gary, Susan, and Walter, Jr. (“Butch”).

In 1952, Lyle, Helen, and family moved to Storm Lake where Helen was a homemaker. They, then, moved to Newell where she joined the O. E. S. of Newell, in time serving as a past worthy matron. In 1967, the family returned to Storm Lake and Helen joined the work force. She worked first at Aalfs Manufacturing and then at the Buena Vista Manor for ten years.

Her hobbies included quilting and sewing. For her 90th birthday, her family put on a one woman quilt show in her honor, displaying over seventy assorted quilts, table clothes, and wall hangings among other pieces, all hand made by Helen. She also had a passion for Monday night football. She loved and adored her family and grandchildren, cherishing her time with each of them.

Those left to cherish Helen’s memory include her children: Lana (Bill) Crilly, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Sharon (Bob) King, of Des Moines, Iowa, Gary (Marlys) Mileham, of Sylvania, Ohio, and Susan Erichsen, of Norfolk, Nebraska; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and twin sisters, Barbara June Pierce and Betty Jean (Herb) Benberg, both of Fort Worth, Texas; as well as extended family members and many friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle; her son, Walter Lyle Mileham, Jr.; four brothers, Max, Roland, Norman, and Allen; two granddaughters, Tamara Lynn Mileham and Patricia Dalen; and one grandson, Aaron Mileham.
