Orin L. Bruns, age 88, of Storm Lake, passed away on Friday, October 04, 2013, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center of Storm Lake.
Born on December 17, 1924, in Galva, Iowa, to George and Sylvia (Kretzmeir) Bruns, Orin Leroy Bruns graduated from Fairview High School in Alta, Iowa. He, then, entered the Navy, serving as a Seaman First Class from January 1945 to July 1946.
Orin married Dorothy Fritz on September 7, 1947, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alta. To this union, three children were born. Orin was baptized and confirmed on February 4, 1948.
A longtime farmer, Orin farmed seven miles north of Alta for ten years before moving north of Storm Lake in 1958. In addition, he worked part time at Dahl’s Lumber Yard and then at Cargill, both in Alta. He retired from farming in 1989.
An active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, he served in many capacities. He was also an active member of the VFW and a 4-H leader. He liked woodworking and helping friends and family with his carpentry skills. He also enjoyed playing cards and spending time with family. Indeed, he loved watching his grandchildren in all of their events.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Les, Delmer, and George Bruns, Jr.
Orin is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Dorothy, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his sons, Dennis, and his wife, Sandy, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Roger, and his wife, Barb, of Lenexa, Kansas, and Bruce, and wife, Pam, of Estherville, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Brandon, Tammy, Todd, Emily, Brittany, Lyndsay, and Anna; two great-grandchildren, Izaac and Charlie; and one brother, Waldo Bruns, of North Carolina; as well as many extended relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 07, 2013, at 10:30 AM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Alta with the Rev. Craig A. Cummins officiating. Burial will be at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery of Storm Lake with military rites conducted by the Alta VFW Post #6172. A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 06, 2013, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta.
