Phyllis R. Schmitt, age 74, of Alta, Iowa, died on Saturday, June 8, 2013, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake following a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

Phyllis R. Dick was born on April 12, 1939, in Early, Iowa, the daughter of William and Rose (LaStrange) Dick. Baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, she also attended Sacred Heart High School, graduating with the class of 1957.

On September 15, 1966, Phyllis married James Schmitt at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early. They were blessed with six children: Lora, Alan, Matthew, Dean, Dave, and Chuck. A very active farm wife, she loved to garden and cook for her family. Indeed, she cherished and loved her family and took especially great pride in her grandchildren.

An active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake over the years, Phyllis gladly volunteered at the SOS Store.

Those who will cherish Phyllis' memory include her husband, James Schmitt, of Alta; her children: Lora (Patrick) Crowe, of South Sioux City, Nebraska, Matthew (Jen) Schmitt, of Sioux City, Iowa, Dean Schmitt, of Alta, Iowa, Dave Schmitt and Holly Ehrp, of Schaller, Iowa, and Chuck Schmitt, of Alta, Iowa; her grandchildren: Brandon and Kelly Crowe; and Alyssa, Lucas, Noah, Avery, and Hunter Schmitt; her step granddaughter, Sydney Frese; and her brothers: Eugene (Linda) Dick, of Sumter, South Carolina, Lawrence (Louise) Dick, of Goodyear, Arizona, and Ronnie (Donna) Dick, of Clearwater, Florida; as well as extended family members and many friends.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Alan; and her sister, Marylyn.

Interment: June 13, 2013 at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa.
