Marvel Anderson, age 90, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and formerly of Marathon, Iowa, died on May 20, 2013, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Marvel Esther Herrig was born on November 13, 1922, on a farm near Wall Lake, Iowa, the third of nine children born to Carl and Bena (Kies) Herrig. Baptized at the Lutheran Church in Wall Lake, she attended country school through the 4th grade. Later, she graduated from Truesdale High School in 1940.
On October 17, 1943, Marvel married Lester Anderson at the Little Sioux Valley Lutheran Church west of Rembrandt, Iowa. They were blessed with five children: Robert, Steven, David, Sandra, and Gregory.
A member of Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon and more recently of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, Marvel placed the Church foremost in her life. She sang in the church choir, joined the Ladies Aid Society, and taught Sunday School for many years.
A member of the Tuesday Study Club along with several other clubs, Marvel especially enjoyed playing cards with the members of her bridge club. For many years, she also liked volunteering her time at nursing homes. Lester and Marvel enjoyed traveling together, especially to Arizona where they wintered with their many friends for twenty-four years and to Texas where they spent two winters.
A loving wife and devoted mother, Marvel treasured her family. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her special joy. She will be remembered and missed for the friendship, ever-present care, and concern she offered for all those she loved.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of sixty-nine years, Lester Anderson, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her children: Robert (Joan) Anderson, of Marathon, Iowa, Steven (Joellen) Anderson, of Elkhart, Indiana, David (Carla) Anderson, of Marathon, Iowa, and Gregory (Christine) Anderson, of Flower Mound, Texas; her grandchildren: Carl (Krissy), Chad (Kim), Derick, Jordan, Lance (Christine), Shelby, and Zach Anderson, Andrea (Keith) Bonanno, Bobbi (Darren) Epperson, Nick Kliegl, Julie (Jamie) Riesselman, and Lacey (TJ) Schmidt; her great grandchildren: Alex, Amanda, Anderson, Hayden, Katelyn, Logan, Lucas, Matthew, Megan, Morgan, Peyton, and Ryan; her sister, Hazel Marrietta, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her brothers, Don (Elaine) Herrig, of Albert City, Iowa, and Harold (Jan) Herrig, of Mountain Lake, Minnesota; her sisters-in-law, Laura (Fred) Herrig, of Boone, Iowa, and Helen (Russell) Herrig, of Comfrey, Minnesota; as well as extended family members and friends.
Marvel was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Bena Herrig; her daughter, Sandra Anderson; her granddaughter, Marvel Anderson; her brothers, Fred and Russell Herrig; her sisters, Lucille Lorenzen, Irene Mohr, and Delores Sennert.
Visitation: 5:00-8:00 p.m., May 24, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., May 25, 2013, at Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon, Iowa.
