Howard Sabel, age 91, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on April 11, 2013, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer.
Howard Joseph Sabel was born on November 15, 1921, in Lincoln, Nebraska, the son of Joseph Sylvester and Bessie (Spring) Sabel.
Growing up, Howard attended school in Omaha. Following his schooling, he entered the United States Marines where he served his country during World War II. During the War in the Pacific, he was injured but was able to return.
On August 21, 1949, Howard married Ruth M. Saunders in Manilla, Iowa. They were subsequently blessed with three sons: Joe, Tom, and Matthew.
In his spare time, Howard loved camping. In his younger years, he also enjoyed fishing and hunting. He loved traveling with his wife, Ruth, to Texas. An avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, he also liked shooting pool. A man of faith, he belonged to the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. He treasured spending time with his family and friends and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Joe (Denise) Sabel, of Sisseton, South Dakota, Tom (Joyce) Sabel, of Newton, Iowa, and Matt (Laurie) Sabel, of Big Lake, Minnesota; his grandchildren: Jennifer Burkett and Jeffrey, Brian, Jacob, Emily, and Jamie Sabel; four great grandchildren: Marcus, Macyn, and Kobi Sabel and Jon David Burkett; and his sisters-in-law: Virginia Jorgensen, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Zona Saunders, of Manilla, Iowa, and Rita Saunders, of Manning, Iowa; as well as extended family members and friends.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Ruth, in 2012.
Visitation: 4:00-6:00 p.m., April 15, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 1:00 p.m., April 16, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
