Willard Schuler, age 89, of Newell, Iowa, died on Saturday, February 16, 2013, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Willard Clarence Schuler was born on June 20, 1923, in Sloan, Iowa, the son of John “Jack” and Grace (Willett) Schuler.
During World War II, Willard entered the military service on November 7, 1944, proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army. He participated in the Liberation of the Philippines on Leyetee and Luzon and the Occupation of Japan. On August 4, 1946, he was honorably discharged.
On January 25, 1947, Willard married Edna I. O’Rourke in Sac City, Iowa. They were blessed with five children: Tom, Colleen, Donald, Todd, and Nolan.
Willard was a devoted member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Over the years, Willard was an active member of the community. He was proud to have started the Newell Little League. Additionally, he was a member of the VFW, the Lions Club, the AFL/CIO Union, and the American Legion of Newell, where he served as Post Commander and County Historian. His many interests included golfing, baseball, football, hunting, fishing and watching high school sports.
Those left to cherish Willard’s memory include his five children: Tom (Debbie) Schuler, of St. Charles, Missouri, Colleen (Neal) Degner, of Wentzville, Missouri, Donald (Donna) Schuler, of St. Charles, Missouri, Todd (Angela) Schuler, of Avon, Ohio, and Nolan (Kinda) Schuler, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; seventeen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; two brothers, Wayne (Jean) Schuler, of Atlantic, Iowa, and Gerald (Joyce) Sievers, of Bellevue, Nebraska; and two sisters, Maxine Corderman, of Newell, Iowa, and Marie (Joe) Waskil, of Sun Lake, Arizona; as well as other extended family members and many friends.
Preceding Willard in death are his wife, Edna; his father, John “Jack” Schuler; his mother, Grace Sievers; his step-father, Paul Sievers; two brothers, Donald Schuler and Darwin Sievers; and his sister, Marjorie Cressler.
Visitation: 4:00-7:00 p.m., February 19, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 10:00 a.m., February 20, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
