Dorothy "Dot" Rystad
October 9, 1915 - January 20, 2013

Dorothy Lillian Rystad, "Dot", age 97, of Richardson, Texas, a former resident of Storm Lake and Rembrandt, died peacefully in her sleep on January 20, 2013.

Born on October 9, 1915, in Sioux City, to Frank and Marie Lean, Dorothy lived in Dakota City, Nebraska, and Sergeants Bluff before returning to Sioux City at the age of twelve. She graduated cum laude from East High School and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education at Morningside College. While in college, she actively participated in the arts as a member of and soloist in the choir, which toured twenty states. A member of Phi Delta Kappa sorority, she also added speech and drama to her many talents.

After graduating from college in 1937, she taught junior and senior high school English, drama, and speech at Rembrandt. In addition, she taught at Lincoln Lee Consolidated School, the Albert City School, and the Storm Lake School.

Dorothy married Milton E. Rystad of Rembrandt on August 15, 1940. In 1952, the family moved to Storm Lake, Iowa. There, she served as an officer in many women's organizations. In the 1950s she was County President of the Federated Women's Club and led a chorus of members. She also belonged to the Melody Club, the Stitch & Chatter Club, the Lake Creek Country Club, and the Delphian Study Club. Indeed, playing an active role in the musical productions of the Storm Lake Melody Club and the Kiwanis, she starred in several roles. A member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, she directed and sang in the choir for several years. She enjoyed oil and watercolor painting, baking, and playing bridge. In addition, she loved to hunt, fish, and golf with her husband and the girls. She enjoyed entertaining, and her guests always received a warm welcome.

Married for sixty wonderful years, the Rystads traveled widely in forty-nine states and abroad. They spent their winters in Richardson, Texas, and other areas. Eventually, Dorothy moved to Richardson in 2003 to be near her family.

A devoted mother and wife, she is survived by two daughters, Ruth Bragg, of Richardson, Texas, and Jean Nelson, and her husband, Doug, of Dallas, Texas; her adoring grandchildren, Daniel Ladeairous, and his wife, Lauren, of Clovis, California, Kelly Jo Tullberg, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jackie Oates, and her husband, Tyler, of Colorado, Angela Sobol, and her husband, Matt, of Melissa, Texas, and Robby Davenport, of Richardson, Texas; and her beloved great grandchildren: Emily, Erin, Elizabeth, and Evan Ladeairous; Kaitlyn and Kamryn Tullberg; and Lyla Sobol; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends.

A memorial service will be held in her honor at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Richardson, Texas, on Saturday, January 26, 2013. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to St. Mark's Lutheran Church Music Department. She will be laid to rest with her late husband in a private burial near Rembrandt at a later date.
