Myrna Edwards, age 85, of Newell, Iowa, died November 12, 2012, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell.
Myrna Joy Skeels was born on April 2, 1927, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Frank Albert and Anna Christina (Pedersen) Skeels. Welcomed home by her older sister, June Elizabeth, she attended the First Baptist Church in Storm Lake where she accepted Christ as her savior and she was baptized by immersion at age 11. Growing up, Myrna attended school in Storm Lake, graduating in 1944.
Following high school graduation, she worked at the telephone office on the south end of Main Street in Storm Lake before attending Buena Vista College where she studied to become an Art Teacher.
On June 12, 1949, Myrna married Francis Edwards at the First Baptist Church in Storm Lake. They were blessed with four children: Doug, Randy, Laurie, and Melinda.
A member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell, Myrna played the piano and organ for church services and Sunday school. She also taught Sunday school for thirteen years.
In her spare time, Myrna enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, doing handwork, painting, and traveling with her husband, Francis. She also had a passion for pitching horseshoes. In the 70s and 80s, she competed in horseshoe pitching and won a state competition. Above all, however, she treasured spending time with her family and friends and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of sixty-three years, Francis Edwards, of Newell, Iowa; her children: Doug (Debbie) Edwards, of Southlake, Texas, Randy (Dyann) Edwards, of Newell, Iowa, Laurie (Rodney) Rasmussen, of Newell, Iowa, and Melinda (Tony) Buchholz, of Newell, Iowa; her grandchildren: Heather (Andre) Bruce, Zach (Courtney) Edwards, Jason (Kristi) Edwards, Steve (Julie) Edwards, Bryce (Ashly) Edwards, Lynde Edwards, Taryn (Shawn) Colburn, Dak (Leigh) Rasmussen, Leigh (Brent) Meyer, Brett (Alicia) Buchholz, and Chad Buchholz; her great grandchildren: Alannah and Zoey Bruce; James, Hunter, Slade, Sloan, Brandon, Jordan, Caydance, Dylan, and Landon Edwards; Madliyn and Lillyan Colburn; Will, Nora, and Maggie Rasmussen; Garrett, Caden, and April Meyer; and Josiah Buchholz; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Myrna was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Anna Skeels; and her sister, June Elizabeth Skeels.
Visitation: 4:00-6:00 p.m., November 16, 2012, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 1:30 p.m., November 17, 2012, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell, Iowa.
