Killed in Auto Crash

Jesse Adams Is Dead of His Injuries

Fatally Hurt When Car Hits Calf and Is Hurled Into Passing Auto.

(Special Correspondence)

Albert City—Jesse Adams, aged 42, night marshal at Albert City since the demise of John Schonstedt, died at 3:15 this Tuesday morning, September 17, 1935, at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital at Fort Dodge from injuries sustained in a head-on collision south of here at 2 o'clock Monday morning.

The accident which cost the life of the marshal and seriously injured Martin Anderson, his companion, occurred two miles south of Albert City near the A. E. Peterson farm.

Anderson, driving a Chevrolet belonging to Evelyn Swanson and accompanied by the marshal, was returning to Albert City after investigating a mysterious car parked by the roadside some miles south of Albert City.

Car Hits Calf

Near the Peterson farm, Anderson dimmed the lights of the Chevrolet to pass a car coming toward them. A calf in the ditch, roused by their approach, leaped into the path of the northbound car.

The impact threw the Chevrolet into the path of an oncoming auto, and they met head-on. The Swanson car received the brunt of the collision. The other, a Chevrolet driven by Carl Benna, was thrown into the ditch. Carl Benna and Harold Conlin, who were in the car, sustained minor injuries.

Conlin ran across the fields to get his own car. Help came from the Peterson farm and the two unconscious men, Adams and Anderson, were brought to the home of Dr. Bridge where their cries of pain aroused the neighborhood.

Cries Arouse Town

Dr. Bridge was out on a call. The Injured men were taken to the office of Dr. C. A. Werner where Dr. R. E. Almquist was summoned. Medical aid was given, but the severe injuries which the night marshal had sustained about the head rendered him frantic. His cries were heard in the stillness of the night for blocks around.

Four men were required to hold him. He tore his clothing off and resisted all attempts to calm him. Finally, he was lodged in the city jail to await the arrival of the Fiscus ambulance from Storm Lake.

The ambulance attendant, Gene Beckman, city marshal, and Cliff Johnson accompanied the night marshal to Fort Dodge.

Dr. R. E. Almquist, B. B. Fiscus, and Mayor Thieman drove to Fort Dodge in the Thieman car. They came back with the report of a cerebral hemmorhage [sic] which resulted in death some hours later.

Anderson Dazed

At the Werner drug store, Martin Anderson remained unconscious for some time. At about 9:00 o'clock, he sat up and conversed with the doctor. He complained of a severe ache in the back of his head although no signs of an injury were to be found on his head or body.

He was taken to Laurens where X-rays of the head were taken, but they showed only a slight abrasion. However, Anderson was still in a sort of daze yet today.

Mrs. Adams was at the bedside of her husband as were his sister, Mrs. Harry Baldwin, of Laurens, and his mother, Mrs. W. J. Adams, of Rossie, as well as his brother, Russell, of Rossie.

Five Children

Five children survive the father: two sons, Roland and Jimmie, and three daughters, Gayle, Lois, and Jane. Jimmie and Jane are twins.

Funeral services will be held at the Free church Friday afternoon, September 20, 1935, at 2:30. Rev. A. P. Peterson will be in charge.
