Richard Vail, age 70, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, in Spencer, Iowa.

Dick, a son of Harold and Gladyce (Bowers) Vail, was born on January 18, 1949, in Des Moines, Iowa. Baptized as an infant and later confirmed at Trinity United Methodist Church in Webb, Iowa, he, also, attended grade school in Webb. In 1967, however, he graduated from Marathon High School. Next, he moved to Des Moines to work at a service station. He, later, moved back to Webb where he worked at a service station and helped his dad farm. On June 19, 1974, Dick married Lourene Miller in Fostoria, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with two children, Amy and Justin.

Throughout his adult years, Dick worked as a small engine mechanic and ran a parts store in Sioux Rapids until 1995 while farming. In addition, he worked for Ronnie Brown Auctions for thirty years.

Active in his community, Dick served on the Boards of Supervisors of Buena Vista County for twenty-two years. He, also, became a founder of the Rembrandt Ball Fields, coached kids in summer ball, served as a youth group leader, as a member of numerous church boards at the First United Church in Sioux Rapids, and on the board of the Albert City Threshermen and Collectors Show.

Dick most enjoyed racing stock cars. Moreover, in his free time, he liked hunting and fishing. Indeed, he started a fishing tradition while he and Lourene were on their honeymoon, which they have followed every year since. Socially speaking, Dick never knew a stranger: no one could have a short conversation with him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Lourene, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; his children, Amy Rozeboom, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Justin (Molly) Vail, of Spencer, Iowa; and his grandchildren: Steven, Max, Kyler, Alexis, and Hunter Rozeboom; and Tyriana and Jersey Vail; as well as nieces, nephews, and extended family members, and friends. Dick was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ann Vail.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 3, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Church in Sioux Rapids. Burial will follow in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, June 2, 2019, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the CHURCH in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
