Helen L. Langner, age 91, of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed on to heaven at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake on Thursday, May 16, 2019.

Helen was born on January 29, 1928, to Ralph and Edna (Hodges) Sheffield in Storm Lake, Iowa. After graduating from Storm Lake High School in 1945, she attended Cornell College and the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux City. On August 8th, 1948, she married Gladwyn Langner at the Methodist Church in South Sioux City, Nebraska. To their union, five sons were born. Later, Helen and Gladwyn welcomed a Korean orphan daughter into their home until she moved to Hope Haven in Rock Valley, Iowa.

Helen lived her life farming with Gladwyn in the Storm Lake and Schaller area before they retired to Storm Lake in 1984. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary in August 2010.

Helen enjoyed reading, listening to classical music, quilting, knitting, doing cross stitch, baking cookies for the boys, putting together jigsaw puzzles, and following her favorite sports teams. Go Cubs!

A lifelong member of the Methodist Church, the ladies circle, the funeral committee, she sang in the church choir as well. Moreover, she belonged to PEO, Chapter EP-NL, for over seventy years.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons: Michael (Diane), of Ankeny, Iowa, Mark (Deborah), of Early, Iowa, Merle, of Jefferson, Iowa, and Marshall (Jane), of Knoxville, Iowa; her daughter, Mary Jo, of Rock Valley, Iowa; and her sister-in-law, Ruth Sheffield, of Midland, Michigan; her grandchildren: Amy (Patty) Connelly; Eric (Kara), Brian (Stephanie), Robert, and Keri (Josh) Woodard; Joseph, Jeff (Lisa), and Ashley (Alex) Baker; Jeremy (Becky), and Sara (Cory) Glover; Tim; her great grandchildren: Courtney, Christopher, Corrine, Luke, Zane, Trevor, Rylee, Prestin, Mykensie, Landon, Konner, Mathew, Cole, and Reeve.

Helen is preceded in death by husband, Gladwyn; her son, Morris Ronald; her grandson, William Paul; her parents, Ralph and Edna Sheffield; her brothers, Gordon and Paul; her sister, Ruth; her sister-in-law, Dorothy; her brother-in-law, Glenn Cunningham.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 20, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will take place at a later date. Visitation is scheduled for one hour before the service at the CHURCH. Helen has donated her body to science for study at Des Moines University. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
