Barbara Rae Degner, age 76, of Newell, Iowa, passed away peacefully on May 26th, 2019, at the Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Barbara Rae Baughman was born on February 8th, 1943, in Albert City, Iowa, to Hugh Jon and Erma Gladys Ham Baughman. When Barb was almost eight years old, her parents blessed their family with her brother, Billy Jon Baughman.

Barb began her education at the Varina Consolidated School. After it closed, she completed her schooling at Newell Providence in 1961. While in school, Barb enjoyed concert band, chorus, and glee club. Of all the times of year, she liked basketball season the most. After all, she played for six years on the first team. After graduating, Barb enrolled in Bernel’s Hairstyling in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to earn a degree in cosmetology.

In December of 1958, she started dating the love of her life, Robert Clyde Degner. In January of 1962, he was drafted into the Army. While he was on leave in March, the two married. Once she completed her schooling, Barb joined Robert in Colorado Springs, Colorado. There, they enjoyed their first two years of marriage until Robert was discharged.

The couple returned home in 1964 and began renting a farm owned by the Kelly family south of Fonda, Iowa. Together, Robert and Barbara lived there and farmed for almost fifty years. They raised cattle, hogs, sheep, corn, beans, and children.

Blessed with three boys: Dennis Lyn, James Lyn, and Jeffery Jon, and one girl, Stevi Rae, they, also, parented over fifty foster children. Indeed, Barb, always, seemed to have children with her. Moreover, her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, often, came to stay with her and Robert, exemplifying the palpable love she had for all children.

A very devoted wife and mother, she, always, preferred being next to Robert, her husband of fifty-three years until his passing on February 7th, 2015. Because of the love she radiated, she will be, greatly, missed by all who knew and loved her.

Baptized to witness how much Jesus meant to her, Barb was born again in November 1985. She firmly believed that each person must have a personal relationship with Jesus in order to have a life with Him in heaven. Jesus is the “Only Way.”

Those left to celebrate her life include her children: Dennis (Julie), James, Jeffery (Darleen), and Stevi Degner; her brother, Bill (Cheryl) Baughman; her sister-in-law, Barbara (Roger) Waggie; her brother-in-law, David (Ellen) Degner; twelve grandchildren; two great-grandchildren (with two more on the way), many nieces, nephews, cousins, fifty foster children, and friends.

Barbara was proceeded in death by her husband Robert; her parents, Hugh and Erma; two stepmothers, Rowena Baughman and Lillian Baughman; and her father- and mother-in-law Fredrick and Arvilla (Gloss) Degner.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 30, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethel Baptist Church in Newell. Burial will follow in the Varina Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, May 29, 2019, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Bethel Baptist Church in NEWELL. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.
