Michael James Brander
September 15, 1952 - May 24, 2019

Michael James Brander, age 66, of Denver, Colorado, formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Friday, May 24, 2019, in Spencer, Iowa.

Mike was born on September 15, 1952, to Lloyd and Esther (Dusing) Brander.
He attended school at St. Mary’s and Storm Lake High School, graduating in 1970. After attending Fort Dodge Community College for one year, Next, he settled in Denver, Colorado, where he worked at various jobs before becoming a mail carrier for the United States Post Service, a job he held until the onset of his cancer.

An avid Denver Broncos fan, Mike loved sports of all kinds, especially baseball, football, and basketball. He made Colorado his home; he loved the mountains. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling to Mexico as well as other places to meet new people and to learn about their cultures.

A very kind and generous person, he was, always, willing to help those in need. His friends can tell many stories about his generosity and loyalty. A loner, he lived very frugally: he always recycled, not wasting anything. He loved his country; he was proud of being a U.S. postal employee.

Mike will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him. Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Esther Brander, of Spencer, Iowa; his sisters: Frances Hood, of Humboldt, Iowa, Barb (Dan) Jorgensen, of Spencer, Iowa, Patty (Joe) Lee, of Iowa City, Iowa, and Joni Brander, of Chicago, Illinois; six nieces; five nephews; and his aunts, Mary Hartman and Doris Dusing; as well as by many cousins, extended family members, and friends.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Brander; his uncles: Tony Brander, Charles (Genie) Dusing, Jim (Doris) Dusing, and Carl Hartman; his aunts, Mary (Morris) Hibbs, Millie (Bill) Glyn, Lorraine (Glen) Peterson, Rose (Chuck) Mills, and Agnes (Scottie) Scott.

A celebration of life will take place Saturday, June 8, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Visitation is scheduled for one hour before the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to a charity of the donor’s choice or to cancer research. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

A special thank you to his friends, Johnny Callaghan and Jim Jorgensen, both from Aurora, Colorado, for all of the help they extended to Mike and his family during these difficult times.
