John A. Massop
January 4, 1931 - May 3, 2019

John Albert Massop, age 88, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Friday, May 3, 2019, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

John was born on January 4, 1931, in Storm Lake, Iowa, to William, Sr., and Anna Maria (Holland) Massop. Baptized as an infant and later confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, Iowa, he attended school in Nemaha, Iowa, graduating from Nemaha High School.

On December 30, 1950, John enlisted in the United States Air Force and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict until he was honorably discharge on October 1, 1954. In commemoration of his service, he was able to take part in an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in 2014.

Upon returning home from the war, John attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, graduated with a Degree in Business Administration. On September 22, 1956, John married Marlene Carlson at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Subsequently, they were blessed with four children: Douglas, Brenda, Rachael, and Karen. A member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake as well as of AMVETS Post #66, he served as post commander for several years.

Very proud of his straight rows throughout his working years, John put all of his effort into farming. Even after he retired, he loved to watch the crops grow and tractors drive by the home farm.

In his spare time, John enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing cards, and attending Sunday night dances with Marlene at the Cobblestone. John and Marlene, also, liked wintering in Arizona and taking a trip to New Zealand and Australia. Moreover, they enjoyed their other travels, especially when they were able to take their four children and their spouses on two memorable trips, one to meet his family in Holland and the other to take a cruise to Alaska for their 50th wedding anniversary. In addition, he treasured a fishing trip to Lake of the Woods with a dozen of the men and boys from the family. He, truly, valued his family and will be, deeply, missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of sixty-two years, Marlene Massop, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Dr. Doug (Kate) Massop, of Des Moines, Iowa, Rachael (Wayne) Kies, of Windom, Minnesota, and Karen (John) Keenan, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his son-in-law, Mark Schmidt, of Missoula, Montana; his grandchildren: Cole, Owen, and Vivian Keenan; Ezra (fiancée, Madeline Doudt); Hannah (fiancé, Luke Hubbard); and Maddisen Kies (fiancé, Vince Belpulsi), Annie (Tom) Lehn; Daniel, Sarah, and David (Katie) Massop; Kellie (Chris) Morrison; Kristin (Sam) Scotchmer; his great grandchildren: Jane and Benjamin Massop and Clara and Jason Scotchmer; his brother, William, Jr., (Karen) Massop, of Kansas City, Missouri; his sister, Marie (Marvin) Hurd, of Seattle, Washington; and his brother-in-law, Galen (MaryJane) Carlson, of Palm Desert, California; as well as extended family members and friends.
