Fern Combes, age 96, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Thursday, May 2, 2019, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Fern Theresa Bumann, a daughter of Richard and Bertha (Weber) Bumann, was born on February 17, 1923, on a farm near Holstein, Iowa. Baptized at Cushing Lutheran Church on November 25, 1923, and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Holstein on Palm Sunday, 1937, she attended a country school and graduated from Holstein Public School in 1940. Next, she enrolled at the National Business Training School in Sioux City, Iowa. During World War II, she worked at Wincharger as a “Rosie the Riveter,” before working for the Sioux City School Lunch Program for thirty-two years.

On June 26, 1943, Fern married Lloyd Combes at the Baptist parsonage in Storm Lake, Iowa. Subsequently, they made their home in Sioux City, Iowa, for sixty-two years. In 2006, however, they moved to Storm Lake and joined St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Lloyd passed away on December 29, 2009. They were married for sixty-six years.

Fern enjoyed baking, sewing, and caring for her family. After she and her husband retired, she liked taking bus trips with community friends, seeing much of America along the way.

Those left to cherish her memory include Michael (Hillarie) Combes, of Oceanside, California, and Craig (Nance) Combes, of Surprise, Arizona, and her brothers: Marvin, and his wife, Laura; Robert; Lloyd; and Wendell, and his wife, Marcella; as well as extended family members and friends.

Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; two sisters, Lois Kass and Gladys Johnson; her brothers, Richard and Luverne Bumann; her sisters-in-law: Margaret, DeEthel, Beverly, and Annetta Bumann; her brothers-in-law: Ernie Meins, John Kass, and Dennis Johnson.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation is scheduled for one hour before the services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to UnityPoint Hospice, 112 West 5th Street, Storm Lake, Iowa 50588. The Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
