November 11, 1924 - April 19, 2019

Ellen A. Rasmussen, age 94, of Newell, Iowa, died on Friday, April 19, 2019, at the Newell Good Samaritan Society in Newell.

Ellen Arlene Lund was born on November 11, 1924, in Newell, Iowa, to Hans P. and Dagmar O. (Andersen) Lund. Growing up, she attended and then graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in 1943. On November 24, 1946, she married Arnold N. Rasmussen at the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. Subsequently, they were blessed with five children: Teresa, Marsha, Rod, Lisa, and Layne.

A member of Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Ellen participated in the Ladies Aid Society. In addition, she belonged to the Danish Sisterhood, the Legion Auxiliary and the Federated Club. Instrumental in starting the Meals on Wheels program, she enlisted the help of the junior and senior class members from the Newell-Fonda High School. In recognition of her accomplishment, she received the Volunteer of the Year award from Governor Branstad in 2009.

An avid gardener, she, especially, enjoyed her roses. Moreover, for many years, she loved doing cross stitch and collected cardinals and Precious Moments. In her spare time, she enjoyed golfing, singing in the church choir and folk dancing. She valued her family, and she treasured being able to attend her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren’s sporting events and programs. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Marsha (Joel) Sedlacek, of Omaha, Nebraska, Rod (Laurie) Rasmussen, of Newell, Iowa, Lisa (Elwyn “Deke”) Kempfert, of Aurelia, Iowa, and Layne (Peggy) Rasmussen, of Johnston, Iowa; her grandchildren: Courtney (Patrick) Clayton, of Fort Worth, Texas, Brad (Erin) Kempfert, of Omaha, Nebraska, Brian (Liz) Kempfert, of Denison, Iowa, Anna Rasmussen, of Johnston, Iowa, Dak (Dr. Leigh) Rasmussen, of Pella, Iowa, Erik Rasmussen, of Johnston, Iowa, Jens Rasmussen, of Johnston, Iowa, Aaron (Chantelle) Sedlacek, of Bennington, Nebraska, and Keith (Meghan) Sedlacek, of Gretna, Nebraska; her great grandchildren: Carson and Cashdon Clayton; Brayden, Hailey Isaiah, and Jesse Kempfert; Garrett, Caden and April Meyer; Will, Nora, and Maggie Rasmussen; Dalton, Ethan, Gavin, Landry, Mia, Saige, Sutton, and Thane Sedlacek; her brother, Norman (Joan) Lund, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and her sister, Ruby Haahr, of Newell, Iowa; as well as extended family members and friends.

Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Rasmussen; her daughter, Teresa Haburn; her granddaughter, Michelle Kempfert; her brother, Elwood (Goldie) Lund; a brother in infancy; her sister, Agnus (Mel) Grundmeier; her brothers-in-law, Harry (Jane) Rasmussen and Leon Haahr.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial will follow in the Newell Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Monday, April 22, 2019, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in STORM LAKE. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
