October 3, 1935 ~ April 23, 2019 (age 83)Abe Junior Falkena, age 83, of Albert City, Iowa, died on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City.
Abe, a son of Abe, Sr., and Anna (Van Veldhuizen) Falkena was born on October 3, 1935, at Sioux Center, Iowa. He lived his youth and received his education in Ireton, Iowa, graduating from the Ireton High School. From November 4, 1957, until his honorable discharge on November 3, 1959, he, faithfully, served his country in the United States Army as a SP4 (T).
On February 17, 1960, Abe married Bonnie Uthe at Sibley, Iowa, and their union was, subsequently, blessed with four children: Pamela, Jeffrey, Kathryn, and Debra. Following their wedding, Abe and Bonnie resided at Inwood, Iowa, for one year before moving to Ireton where they farmed for twelve years. In 1972, however, the Falkenas made their home near Albert City where Abe worked for Benson Industries in the turkey business for twenty-six years. Then, in 1996, they moved into Albert City where Abe became a self-employed carpenter and fix-it man. In addition, he drove the Rides transportation bus for eight years.
A member of the Marathon United Methodist Church, Abe served as a trustee and in various other capacities. Active in the Albert City community, he served on the City Council, as a member of the Vision Committee of the Albert City Mainstreet Program, and as a member of the Lion’s Club where he, also, had the honor of serving as a District Governor. His special interests included woodworking, reading, and camping.
Abe’s life will always be honored and cherished by his family which includes his wife, Bonnie, of Albert City, Iowa; his children: Pamela (Gary) DeWall, of Scranton, Iowa, Jeffrey (Debra) Falkena, of Albert City, Iowa, Kathryn (Daniel) Josephson, also of Albert City, Iowa, and Debra (Steve) Russell, of Cambridge, Iowa; his grandchildren: Matthew Falkena; Brian and Becky Josephson; and Christopher and Ryan Murphy; Kayla Nunnery; Nathan, Anna, and Amanda Russell; Amy Sawvell; and Keri Taylor; thirteen great grandchildren, two brothers, Everet (Barb) Falkena, of North Platte, Nebraska, and Andrew Falkena, of Lakewood, Colorado; his sister, Coba Hulshof, of Hawarden, Iowa, and a sister-in-law, Marvella Falkena, of Hospers, Iowa; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Fred.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 26, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Marathon. Burial will follow in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City. Visitation will take place on Thursday, April 25, 2019, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
