February 12, 1933 - March 23, 2019

Dwayne R. Ehlers, age 86, of Alta, Iowa, died on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Dwayne was born on February 12, 1933, to Paul and Amanda (Ripke) Ehlers. Baptized on February 26, 1933, at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake and later confirmed there on March 30, 1947, he attended and graduated from Albert City-Truesdale High School in 1951. During the Korean War, Dwayne served in the United States Navy from 1953 until his honorable discharge in 1957. As a result of his service, he earned medals for the Europe Occupation and the National Defense. On December 3, 1967, he married Phyllis Jean Harms at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake. Subsequently, they were blessed with three children: Dan, Tim, and Jeff.

Involved with several local organizations such as the Pork Producers and the Farm Bureau, Dwayne sought to make his voice heard in the farming community. A lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, he served as a church trustee and on the cemetery committee.

In his spare time, Dwayne liked fishing and traveling. In addition, he enjoyed his tractor and hat collection and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife, Phyllis, of Alta, Iowa; his sons: Dan (Dorene) Ehlers, of Newell, Iowa, Tim (Taffy) Ehlers, of Lakeville, Minnesota, and Jeff (Jen) Ehlers, of Woodbury, Minnesota; his grandchildren: Jenny and Ryan (Liz) Ahlers and Avery, Chase, Gage, Madilyn, and Ryan Ehlers; his great-grandchildren: Amelia, Bella, Brooklyn, Irelyn, and River Ahlers and Andrew Peterson.

Dwayne was preceded in death by his brothers: Gordon (Margie); Orville (Irene); and Edgar (Marcella) Ehlers; his sister, Eldora (Luther) Zadow; and his grandson, Craig Ahlers.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 28, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will take place Wednesday, March 27, 2019, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in STORM LAKE. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is overseeing the arrangements.
