Delbert Gustaf Johnson
October 30, 1928 - January 14, 2019

Delbert Johnson, age 90, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Monday, January 14, 2019.

Delbert Gustaf Johnson, a son of Oscar and Thora (Nelson) Johnson, was born on October 30, 1928, in Hill City, Minnesota. Baptized as an infant at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hill City, Minnesota, and later confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa, he attended grade school in Aurelia where he would, eventually, graduate from high school. Then, he enlisted in the United States Army, faithfully serving his country from February 6, 1951, until January 23, 1953, during the Korean War.

On March 20, 1955, Delbert married Norma Jean Hansen in Newell. Subsequently, they were blessed with five children: Mark, Jana, Lora, Lisa, and Brad. A faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church for over sixty years and very much involved in his church as an elder, trustee, and usher, Delbert shared his love of Christ throughout his life. Until 2004, Delbert worked as a brick mason, taking great pride in all his projects throughout Storm Lake and the surrounding area.

In his free time, Delbert loved enjoying the outdoors: hunting, fishing, and gardening. He liked growing cucumbers to make pickles and would churn out homemade ice cream to share with his family. Above all, Delbert loved his family very much, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed getting together with family and hosting the fourth of July. Always his family’s biggest fan, he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Norma, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Mark Johnson, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Jana (Matt) Weiss, of Ames, Iowa, Lora Johnson, of Marion, Iowa, Lisa (Mike) Sahr, of Woodbury, Minnesota, and Brad (Kelly) Johnson, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his sister, Ethel (Mel) Kunze, of Austin, Texas; his grandchildren: Jessica and Jay Johnson, of Kansas City, Missouri, Andy (Krystina) Weiss, of Alexandria, Minnesota, Ellen (Gunnar) Wyatt, of Carlisle, Iowa, Taylor Oakley, of Burnsville, Minnesota, Regan (Nolan) Christians, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Sydney, Harry, and Lincoln Oakley, of Marion, Iowa, and Brady and Paige Sahr, of Woodbury, Minnesota; and two great-grandchildren, Ada Wyatt, of Carlisle, Iowa, and Carter Christians, of Marion, Iowa; as well as extended family members and friends.

Delbert was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Thora Johnson; his brothers: Melvin, Vernon, Richard, and Ervin Johnson; his sister, Lucille Howard; and his niece, Mary Hansen Anderson.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, January 20, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. A private family burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will take place before the service at the church beginning at 12:30 p.m. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
