January 24, 1944 - November 3, 2018James “Jim” Allen Hunter, 74, of Great Falls, Montana, passed away on November 3, 2018, at Providence St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, Montana, of complications following a heart procedure.
Jim was born in the Porath Hospital to Harold and Wanda (Hansen) Hunter on January 24, 1944. He attended school in Newell, graduating in 1962. On October 26, 1963, he married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Uren. Subsequently, Jim and Ginny had three daughters: Brenda Marie, Rhonda Rae, and Paula Jean. Jim started his career at Northwestern Bell in Des Moines, Iowa, and then transferred to Storm Lake, Iowa. He finished his career with U.S. West in Spencer, Iowa. Eventually, Jim and Virginia moved to Great Falls, Montana, to be closer to their family. They, also, spent several winters in Arizona.
A devoted family man, Jim and Virginia took their entire family to Hawaii for their 50th wedding anniversary. They, also, spent countless hours on the road attending sporting events and other extracurricular activities, cheering on their children and grandchildren. Jim had a special bond with each grandchild. A generous and gentle soul, he shared much wisdom. A perpetual learner and a Mr. Fix-It, Jim loved to find solutions to any problem. In earlier years, he spent a lot of time hunting and fishing. Through these activities, he built a close connection with his nephew, Tony Bodholdt. He will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Jim is survived by Virginia, his wife of fifty-five years; his three daughters: Brenda (Patrick) Stanton, of Dexter, Michigan, Rhonda Hunter, of Great Falls, Montana, and Paula (Brian) Olsen, also of Great Falls, Montana; his seven grandchildren: Tanner, James, and Jake Olsen, of Bozeman, Montana, Allie Olsen, of Great Falls, Montana, Laura Stanton, of Boston, Massachusetts, Ryan Stanton, of Berkeley, California, and Thomas Stanton, of Hempstead, New York; and his siblings: Judy (Dale) Bodholdt, of Newell, Iowa, Bonnie Hunter, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Gary (Ann) Hunter, of Omaha, Nebraska, and Lary (Diane) Hunter, of Waverly, Iowa. Preceding Jim in death were his parents and parents-in-law, Glen and Delephine Uren.
Jim requested no services and donated his body to science. A celebration of life will be held in the summer of 2019. The family suggests memorial donations in Jim’s name go to the Great Falls Public Schools Foundation at P.O. Box 2429, Great Falls, Montana 59403.
