Ruth Wirkus, age 81, of Linn Grove, Iowa, died on Sunday, November 4, 2018, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City, Iowa.

One of twelve children, Ruth Marilyn Rosenbaum, a daughter of Howard and Ida (Strand) Rosenbaum, was born on the family farm in Union County, South Dakota, on April 21, 1937. A very close family, they loved each other very much. Baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elk Point, South Dakota, she received her education at Jefferson, South Dakota. As a young girl, she enjoyed cooking with her mother and grandmothers.

On January 21, 1953, Ruth married Raymond Wirkus at Webster, South Dakota. Their union was, subsequently, blessed with four children: Cheryl, Terry, Diane, and Barb, all of whom they loved so very much. Ruth enjoyed having Sunday dinners with her family, babysitting her grandchildren, and fishing with her husband. Everyone who knew her will remember her as a loving and compassionate lady. With her very nurturing nature, Ruth took care of many people whether she knew them well or not. In addition, she had a love of flowers and of taking care of the birds in her yard, especially the hummingbirds. She and her best friend, Mary Peterson Irwin, loved going to Riversoo Park, roller skating, dancing, and attending the Gordon Twin Drive-in Theaters. Ruth and Mary remained best friends to this day.

Ruth’s life is loved, honored, and cherished by her family which includes her children: Cheryl(Gene) Johnson, of Linn Grove, Iowa, Terry Wirkus, of Spencer, Iowa, Diane Hach, of Albert City, Iowa, and Barb Cox, of Las Vegas, Nevada; eleven grandchildren; thirty great grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Virginia Sundleaf; her brother, Randy (Norma) Rosenbaum; and a sister-in-law, Janet Rosenbaum; as well as by nieces, nephews, other extended family members, and her many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Ida Rosenbaum; her husband, Raymond; her six sisters: Marcella, Lavonne, Norriene, Corriene, Donna and Darlene, and three brothers: Orville, Richard, and Russell, her twin brother.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 9, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Linn Grove. Burial will follow in the Barnes Township Cemetery in Linn Grove. Visitation will take place on Thursday, November 8, 2018, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
