Baptized at the First Christian Church in Laurens, Iowa, he continued to attend church there in his youth. Nonetheless, he attended school in Havelock, Ware, and Laurens, Iowa, while growing up on the farm in Havelock, Ware, Laurens, and Mallard, Iowa. At first, he had a few odd jobs. He worked for Lundell in Cherokee, Iowa, and on trailer houses in Nebraska. Eventually, however, he returned to the farming, acquiring his own farm just North of Laurens, Iowa. He enjoyed the work including taking care of livestock. After retiring from farming in 1994, he moved into Storm Lake, Iowa.

Harris was, always, reaching out to help everyone he could, neighbors and family alike. He was just a phone call away. Although Harris never married, he became a father figure to his nieces and nephews as well as his great nieces and great nephews. When not busy on the farm, he liked watching western movies and T.V. shows. Moreover, he enjoyed spending time with his family. A very busy man, he, nevertheless, did make time for travel. The places he visited include Salt Lake City, Utah, Kansas City, Missouri, Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, Black Hills, South Dakota, Denver, Colorado, and Akron, Ohio. In addition, he liked attending the Iowa State Fair, but most of all, he enjoyed attending the Clay County Fair every year.

A few years back, Harris moved into the North Lake Manor in Storm Lake where he enjoyed the staff and other residents. Although he did enjoy all the activities offered there, he liked Bingo the most, and he enjoyed the everyday visits from his nephew, John Henderson. After the North Lake Manor closed, he moved to Sunset Knoll in Aurelia, Iowa. His most recent move, however, took him to the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Survived by two brothers, Gerald (MaryAnn) Bishop, of Spencer, Iowa, and Ron (Barb) Bishop, of Tuscan, Arizona; a sister, Joyce (Larry) Matzdorff, of Williams, Arizona; and a brother-in-law, Buzz Brockey; as well as by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces, great-great nephews, and many cousins and friends, Harris valued his family.
