Harlan Kent Genson, age 83, of Linn Grove, Iowa, died on Tuesday, September 4, 2018, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City, Iowa.

Harlan, a son of Henry and Anna (Haroldson) Genson, was born on September 9, 1934, on the family farm. Baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Linn Grove, he attended all thirteen years of his education at the Linn Grove School, graduating with the Class of 1952. While in school, he played football, basketball, and baseball and sang in the mixed chorus. Then, he began farming on the “home place” south of Linn Grove.

On October 19, 1952, Harlan married Judy Pennington at Jackson, Minnesota. In time, they were blessed with three children: Stuart, Jeff, and Ann. Harlan was employed at Wilson’s in Cherokee for some years and later began working at the Linn Grove Hatchery where he remained until he was 78 years old. On their 25th wedding anniversary, Harlan and Judy enjoyed a trip to Hawaii and ten years later they returned to Hawaii where they visited four islands. They belonged to a couple’s card club for many years. A very private man, Harlan enjoyed caring for his roses.

Harlan’s life is honored and cherished by his family which includes his wife, Judy, of Linn Grove, Iowa; his children: Stuart (Kayla) Genson, of Linn Grove, Iowa, Jeff (Susan) Genson, of Powder Springs, Georgia, and Ann (Dale) Rattray, of Adel, Iowa; his grandchildren: Rochelle Lester, Lindsey Bailey, Brooke Rattray, and Mike and Dan Genson; and six great grandchildren; as well as by other extended family members and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Shirley Otten.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 7, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at the Riverside Evangelical Free Church in Linn Grove, Iowa. Burial will follow in the Little Sioux Valley Lutheran Cemetery in Rembrandt, Iowa. Visitation will take place for one hour before the service at the church. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
