Sharon Gail Helgeson
August 27, 1945 - August 14, 2018The youngest of five children, Sharon Gail Helgeson was born to Burl and Jessie (Hackworth) Dykes on August 27, 1945, in Falls City, Nebraska. Having grown up in Percival, Iowa, with her siblings, Virginia, Shirley, Jim, and Mary, she graduated from the Sidney Consolidated High School in 1963. Then, she worked at the Pendleton Woolen Mills and the Nebraska City News-Press as a proof reader for four years. After moving to Albert City, she worked as a teller at Citizen’s First National Bank and the Albert City Saving’s Bank.
On August 10, 1968, Sharon married Bernie Gutz at Zion Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. For a few years, they lived in Germany. After returning stateside, they were blessed with a daughter, Kelly Jo. On December 20, 1986, Sharon married David Helgeson in the chapel of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert City where they attended services for many years. For nine years, she served on the funeral committee as well as on the Altar Guild. At their wedding, Sharon’s daughter served as maid of honor and David’s brother, James, as best man. After working at the bank for eleven years, she quit to help David farm and raise Holstein heifers. They continued to live on the farm until they retired in 2012.
Sharon and David enjoyed going to the grandkids’ activities and school events, antiquing, and rummaging through flea markets and garage sales. Indeed, Sharon enjoyed “blinging,” believing she could make all things new and sparkly again. Treasuring her family, she tried to teach her grandkids “this too shall pass” and “just keep smiling!”
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters: Virginia Craig and Mary Thomas; her favorite grandma, Anna Hackworth; her in laws, John and Esther Helgeson and Norma Dykes; and her brother-in-law, James Helgeson.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, David, of Spencer, Iowa; her daughter, Kelly, and her husband, B.J. Habben, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; her grandchildren: Caden, Daryn, Parker, and Shaylen; her brother, Jim Dykes, of Mountain Home, Arkansas; her sister, Shirley Miller, and her husband, Frank, of Mountain Home, Arkansas; and her sisters-in-law, Julie Helgeson and Denise Fritz, and her husband, David, of Clear Lake, Iowa; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
