July 28, 1926 - July 12, 2018

Mary E. King, age 91, of Urbandale, formerly of Storm Lake, died on Thursday, July 12, 2018, in Johnston, Iowa.

Mary Elizabeth Dewey was born on July 28, 1926, to Dr. J.R. and Eva (Hall) Dewey in Schaller, Iowa. Baptized at the Schaller Presbyterian Church in 1926 and later confirmed in her faith in 1939, she attended school in Schaller, graduating with the class of 1943. Next, she attended Grinnell College before graduating from Gregg Business College in 1946.

On August 20, 1946, Mary married Herbert L. King at the Presbyterian Church in Schaller. Classmates, she and Herb had started dating in high school. Subsequently, their union was blessed with five children: Steven, Thomas, Barbara, Susan, and Mark.

An active member of both the Schaller Presbyterian Church and the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, Mary served both churches as a Deacon and Elder. In addition, she worked as a homemaker and a secretary. An active member of PEO and the Order of the Eastern Star, she served in various capacities with those organizations as well. Mary, also, enjoyed traveling to Arizona and took great pride in her family. Moreover, she loved rooting for the Chicago Cubs. Eventually, she and Herb moved to Urbandale, Iowa, to be closer to family.

Those left to cherish her memory include her five children: Steven (Susan) King, of Douglasville, Georgia, Thomas King and Barbara (Jeff) Blough, all of Johnston, Iowa, Susan (Wayne) Bates, of Mesa, Arizona, and Mark (Jackie) King, of Urbandale, Iowa; eleven grandchildren: Candace (Scott) Foerst, of Atlanta, Georgia; Brian (Erin) King, of Nantucket, Massachusetts, David King, of Newport Beach, California, Aaron (Kelli) King, of West Des Moines, Iowa, Sarah (Reggie) Voyles, of Sac City, Iowa, Lisa (Mat) Beaman, of Ankeny, Iowa, Melanie (Jason) Broich, of Clive, Iowa, Michele (Kirk) Nelson, of Nixa, Missouri, Michael (Darcy) Bates, of Goodyear, Arizona, Allison King, of Kansas City, Missouri, and Adam King, of Urbandale, Iowa; fourteen great grandchildren: Fiona and Sienna Foerst; Charlie, Kinnick, and Sydney King; William, Landon, and Millie Voyles; Madelynne and Cody Broich; Brock and Brynn Nelson; and Kylie and Kolbie Bates.

Mary was preceded in death by Herbert, her husband of sixty-six years; her parents, Dr. J.R. and Eva Dewey; her parents-in-law, Clarence and Allegra King; her step father-in-law, D.J. Bennett; her brothers-in-law, Wilfred and Joseph King and Linton Lehrer; her sisters-in-law, Rosemary and Mabel King; her daughter-in-law, Colette King; and her granddaughter, Laura King.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, July 16, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Schaller Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for one hour before the service at the church. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
