George Francis Schuller
October 4, 1940 - June 26, 2018George Schuller, age 77, of Alta, Iowa, died on Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at the Sunset Knoll Care and Rehab Center in Aurelia, Iowa.
George Schuller, a son of Dennis and Ferne Schuller, first stepped up to the plate on October 4, 1940, in Mallard, Iowa. Although he considered the Mallard area his home field, the family moved to Spencer during his teen years where George enjoyed working on the dairy farm and having fun at the family cabin at Lost Island.
As often happens, a young girl, Joyce Barglof, living south on Highway 71 caught his eye. He married her on January 21, 1961. Soon thereafter, they began their starting line-up with Tammy, Debbie, Shelly, and Greg, all of whom they raised in Alta.
Throughout the innings of his life, George enjoyed outdoor sports including golfing, hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling. Softball, however, held a special place in his heart. For many years, he played with pizazz on Clem’s fastpitch team. Indeed, his speed and agility enabled him to rarely miss a ball while playing second base.
During his seventh inning retirement stretch, George became the Chicago Cubs number one fan. After the Cubs won the World Series in 2016, George proclaimed that he could, now, die happily. In his estimation, he had attended the perfect game at Wrigley Field when the Chicago Cubs won playing the Houston Astros with a walk off homerun in the bottom of the 13th inning. Dressed head to toe in Cubs attire, he, soon, found, in his excitement, that many fans were asking to take his picture. In the off season, George and Joyce liked to spend time socializing at the casino, playing cards, going to the Spencer Fair, visiting Okoboji, and creating family memories. During George’s ninth inning as his health declined, he, often, watched “The Price Is Right,” “Wheel of Fortune,” and cowboy movies. Indeed, he wound never even consider missing any film starring John Wayne.
The individuals who continue to fill the stands include his mother, Ferne Schuller, of Spencer; his sister, Carol Thoma, of Laurens; his brothers, Ronald (Margaret) and Roger Schuller, both of Omaha; and his brother-in-law, Jim (Marge) Barglof, of Spencer. In the front row sits Joyce, his wife of fifty-seven years; his daughters, Tammy (Todd) Peterson, of Alta, Debbie (Steve) Ehr, of Dunkerton, and Shelly (Craig) Stille, of Altoona; and his son, Greg (Jen) Schuller, of Ankeny. The “bleacher bums” include his grandchildren, Neal Peterson, of Alta, Halley (Brian and great-grandson Calvin) Ryherd, of Des Moines, Alex Peterson, of Waukee, Joshua Ehr, of Marion, Kyle (Emsy and future great-grandchild #2) Stille, of Altoona, and Melanie, Anthony, and Andrew Ehr, of Dunkerton.
In the post-game, George joins his father, Dennis Schuller; his mother- and father-in-law, Ernie and Myrtle Barglof; and his brothers-in-law, Ray and Art Barglof; as well as numerous friends and family members.
George would’ve liked to have watched more Cubs games, “HOOT! HOOT!”, but overall, he felt that with his life he had scored a homerun.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The family requests that friends and family wear either a favorite Chicago Cubs shirt or casual attire. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
