For some time Mr. Hughes worked as a livery stable hand for Orville James. Then he and his brother went into partnership in a livery business of their own where they bought and sold horses.
He was united in marriage with Anna Mae Olmsted of Sac City in June 1891. Four boys were born in the family: Owen John, William, David and Harvey. Mrs. Hughes passed away in 1904.
In 1908 Mr. Hughes was united in marriage to Viola Fettis of this city and this beloved mother helped him raise his family of boys to manhood. After the death of his brother in 1907, the family moved to a farm in Grant township where they resided for some 27 years. Later Mr. Hughes retired from active business and he and his family moved back to Storm Lake where Mrs. Hughes died in 1939.
Mr. Hughes enjoyed good health until he was about 80 years old. The last several years he has been in a declining state of health which ended in his death at Swallum hospital on Sunday, Sept. 4, after an illness of some two years duration. He had reached the age of 87 years, 2 months, and 8 days.
Two of his sons preceded him in death. Owen passed away in 1912 and William passing away in August.
He leaves two other sons: David and Harvey of Storm Lake. Several grandchildren also mourn his going.
