Gladys Heuton
January 3, 1918 ~ November 1, 2017 (age 99)Gladys Heuton, age 99, of Rembrandt, Iowa, died on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City.
Gladys Berns, a daughter of William and Freda (Hebbel) Berns, was born on January 3, 1918, in Carroll County, Iowa. Baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Glidden, and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Storm Lake, she married Loyal Liebsch on December 22, 1940, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Storm Lake. They lived on their farm in Scott Township all their married life. A charter member of Grace Lutheran Church, Storm Lake, she, actively, participated in the Ladies Aid Society and taught Sunday School for many years. After earning a B.A. Degree from Buena Vista College, she taught for many years in the Albert City-Truesdale Schools, retiring in 1975. She loved teaching!
Loyal Liebsch had serious heart problems most of his adult life. In early February 1978, he entered a hospital at Rochester, Minnesota, for heart surgery to replace and repair heart valves. God called Loyal home in early July 1978. On September 30, 1979, Gladys married Virgil Heuton, a childhood friend. They continued to live on the farm in Scott Township but joined Zion Lutheran Church, rural Storm Lake. With Gladys’ marriage to Virgil Heuton came the added blessing of Virgil’s family. In their almost thirty years of marriage, Gladys and Virgil enjoyed life on the farm with the freedom to travel and visit family and friends. Virgil, however, began having serious health problems during the winter of 1998-99. Alas, God called him home on July 26, 2009. Gladys continued to live on the farm until her health forced her to move to the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City. God, then, called her home, on November 1, 2017.
Those left to cherish her memory include her sister, Viola Fricke, of O’Neal, Nebraska; a step son, Steve Heuton, of Florida; and a step son-in-law, Ben Cheshire, of Georgia; as well as several step grandchildren; several step great grandchildren; extended family members, and friends. Gladys is preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Loyal Liebsch and Virgil Heuton; five brothers; four sisters; three step-daughters; and three step sons.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 4, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place Friday, November 3, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
