Maurita J. Leahy
May 6, 1936 – August 28, 2017

Maurita passed away on August 28, 2017, at home.

Maurita Joan Murray, a daughter of Wilfred Clare and Mary (Kestel) Murray, was born on May 6, 1936, in Storm Lake, Iowa. She graduated from Briar Cliff College with a degree in nursing and earned a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) from St. Ambrose College. On July 16, 1960, she married George John Leahy, Jr., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Storm Lake, Iowa. After fifty-three years of married life, George passed away on December 12, 2013.

Maurita maintained her nursing license for most of her adult life. After her children moved away, she volunteered throughout our community and served as a school nurse at Holy Family School. She was a longtime member of Holy Family Parish and the Genesis West Auxiliary.

Known for the smile on her face and an easy laugh with a giving spirit, Maurita, easily, endeared herself to others. An avid sports fan, she, especially, enjoyed following the World Champion Chicago Cubs and the games at Assumption High School. In addition, she enjoyed attending her local grandchildren’s activities. She had a great social network and community of friends, and enjoyed keeping tabs on the people and the ongoing events in our community.

Maurita is survived by her children and their spouses: Joe (Julie) Leahy, of St. Joseph, Michigan, Anne (Tim) Malecek, Marion, Iowa, Stephen Leahy (Yuh Ling Wen), of Hong Kong, Edward (Mindy) Leahy, of Eldridge, and Kathleen (Jesse) Allison, of Davenport; ten grandchildren: Jamie Allison; Alisha (Brandon) Dvorak; Chris, Kraig, Paul, and Ryan Leahy; Jared and Megan Malecek; and Jessica and Jon Vernon; and two siblings, Paul (Martha) Murray, of Alta, Iowa, and Rev. Gene Murray, of Marcus, Iowa; and two sisters-in-law, Jane Murray, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Maryetta Masterson, Austin, Texas.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings: Mary “Kiddo” (Ed) Motz, Joe (Lila) Murray, Kathleen “Dolly” (Bernard “Cody”) McKenna, Bill Murray D.D.S., Raymond (Donna) Murray, and Rev. Ed Murray. May they rest in peace.
