Mary Neville, age 88, of Newell, Iowa, died on Saturday, August 5, 2017, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Mary Hal Nance, was born on August 7, 1928, to Alfred and Mary Ann (Warren) Nance in Graham, Texas. After graduating from Graham High School in 1945, she attended North Texas State College in Denton, Texas. There she met the love of her life, Russell Neville, while they shared meals at a boarding house.

Mary and Russ married on February 1, 1947, in front of the fireplace of her childhood home in Graham, Texas. The happy couple immediately moved to Odebolt, Iowa, where they lived for three years before settling in Newell, Iowa. Proud to raise her three children, Shannon, Michael, and Beth, in Newell, she relished the friendships she made there over the years.

A woman of faith, Mary attended the United Methodist Church practically her entire life. She served on several committees and taught Sunday school and Bible school as well. Active in the Newell community, especially with the Newell Public Library, and an avid reader, she, was always, discussing with others the various books they had read. In addition, she enjoyed knitting, doing needle work, and sewing.

Those left to celebrate Mary’s life include her children, Michael (Marlene) Neville, of Iowa City, Iowa, and Beth (Mark) Long, of Waukee, Iowa; her daughter-in-law, Nadja Neville, of Stuart, Florida; her grandchildren: Amber Neville (Ofer Sivan), Abigail Neville (Brandon Vernese), Casey Neville (Cooper Grecco), Keaton (Scott) Pulver, Kelsey (Devin) James, and Lino Dilger; her great grandchildren: Opal, Archer, Jaya, Kalyssa, Stella, Abbott, and Madden; and Milo and Laura Garcia-Salom, a Venezuelan foreign exchange student during the 1974-1975 school years. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Beulah; her brother, James; her husband, Russ (2000); and her son, Shannon (2010).

The family wishes to thank the compassionate staff on the second floor of the BVRMC and Unity Point Hospice for the wonderful care they gave Mary and her family.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell. Burial will follow in the Newell Cemetery. Visitation will take place Tuesday, August 8, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell. Memorials may be directed to the Newell Public Library or Unity Point Hospice. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is overseeing the arrangements.
