Darlene Dubes, age 94, of Overbrook, Kansas, formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Sunday, July 23, 2017, at the Brookside Retirement Community in Overbrook.

Darlene Maxine Cartwright, a daughter of Ernest Vere and Hazel (Petticord) Cartwright, was born on June 21, 1923, in Garden Grove, Iowa. She attended school in Davis City, Iowa, graduating from Davis City High School in 1941. Next, she continued her education at AIB in Des Moines where she took business courses.

On June 7, 1945, Darlene married Harold Mart in Davis City. Subsequently, they were blessed with one son, Craig. Tragically, in 1970, Harold died in a car accident.

Darlene met Millard Dubes in a couples’ bridge club. They married on July 7, 1976, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Ames, Iowa. She, gladly, welcomed Millard’s three children: Jane, Brian, and Cameron, into her life.

Darlene worked at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in the purchasing office and later in the pharmacy. After retiring, she continued to volunteer at the hospital. A member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church while living in Storm Lake, she, also, played an active role with the historic Harker House.

Darlene enjoyed entertaining, playing bridge, and flower arranging. In 2011, she moved to Overbrook, Kansas, to be closer to family. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many. Indeed, she will be, deeply, missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Jane Braksick, of Missouri, Brian (Shelly) Dubes, of Tennessee, Cameron Dubes, of New York; six grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and her sister, Sharon (Jack) Leftwich, of McLouth, Kansas; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Harold Mart, in 1970; her second husband, Millard Dubes, in 2006; her son, Craig Mart, in 2013; her brother, Gerald Cartwright; her sister, Helen Latta; and her son-in-law, Denny Braksick.

A Funeral Mass will be offered Monday, July 31, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Pocahontas, Iowa. Visitation will take place for one hour before the service at the church. Memorial may be directed to the Harker House, PO Box 368, Aurelia, Iowa 51005. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is overseeing the arrangements.
