Violet Kuhn
March 28, 1923 - July 9, 2017Violet Irene (White) Kuhn, age 94, of Rapid City, South Dakota, formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2017, at the Prairie Hills Care and Rehabilitation Center in Rapid City.
The fourth of seven children, Violet was born on March 28, 1923, in Dodge County, Minnesota, to Elmer T. and Stacy May (Cardinal) White. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Newell, Iowa, where she attended school through the tenth grade. On December 28, 1939, she married Earl J. Kuhn. To their union, a daughter, Donna, and a son, Richard, were born.
Starting their married life with virtually nothing in an 8’ x 10’ homemade trailer, they built a successful and happy life together with hard work and a good sense of ethics. In about 1944, Earl began farming, and Violet took up her role as a farm wife which she maintained until 1967 when they moved into Storm Lake, Iowa. There, Violet went to work as a turkey inspector at the turkey plant. In 2012, however, she moved into an assisted living facility in Denison, Iowa, closer to Richard. Because of some health problems, she, herself, moved into a nursing home in Denison in 2015. After Richard passed away in May 2015, she moved yet again nearer Donna to a nursing home in Rapid City, South Dakota, where she resided until her death.
A gracious hostess welcoming everyone into her home, she prepared wonderful meals. A hard worker and an immaculate housekeeper, she, however, never minded the messes her grandkids made. For their part, they remember her as always truthful and fair in her gift giving, making sure they all got the same gift or dollar amount. Otherwise, she enjoyed sewing clothing, making patchwork quilts, and putting puzzles together.
Violet is survived by her sister, Bonnie; her daughter, Donna (Dennis) Dressen; her grandchildren, Chris (Donna) and Jay (Stacie) Dressen; her great grandchildren, Nathan, Emmy, Lynsey, and Karlee; her extended family members: Larry Tastad, and his children, Teresa (Dan) Gillen, and Cynthia, Nick (Jennifer), and Douglas (Bee) Tastad; and Larry’s great grandchildren: Lauren, Sarah, Evan, Eric, Claire, Brodrick, and Marcos. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son; her sisters, Amy, Opal, Vivian, and Marjorie; and her brother, Lyle.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 17, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Newell Cemetery. Visitation will be for one hour before the service at the church. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is overseeing the arrangements.
