Orville Edmund Winterhof died on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, Iowa.

Orville Winterhof, a son of William and Hilda (Litchenberg) Winterhof, was born on July 3, 1921, in Diamond Township, Cherokee County, south of Alta, Iowa. Baptized on July 17, 1921, and confirmed on March 31, 1935, at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Hanover, he attended school there as well. During World War II, he served in the US Navy. On June 30, 1946, he married Iona Wilhelmina Stratmann at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Latimer, Iowa. He, subsequently, farmed near Aurelia until he retired and moved into town in 1974. In addition, he worked at Beals Motor Rewind in Cherokee from 1970 to 1986. Later, he drove for Sleezer Select Stock of Aurelia. An active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Aurelia, he, also, belonged to the Grashoff-McManus American Legion Post #390 of Aurelia and the Aurelia Golf Club. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in various sporting events and other activities. He, dearly, loved his family, his greatest joy.

Preceding Orville in death were his parents; his wife, Iona, on April 30, 2016; a son, Dean Winterhof, on April 26, 2005; three brothers: Wilmer, and his wife, Gloria, Harry, and his wife, Dorothy, and Marvin, and his wife, Myrna, a sister, Lorna Franzmier, and her husband, Edwin, a sister-in-law and her husband, Norma and Darrel Borcherding.

Survivors include two sons: Craig, and his wife, Patti Winterhof, of Denver, Colorado, and Brian, and his wife, Lorri Winterhof, of Cherokee; and four daughters: Elaine Meyer, of Cherokee, Janet, and her husband, Dan Whitney, of Aurelia, Joyce, and her husband, Ken Bahrke, of Panora, Iowa, and Marcia, and her husband, Gary Klett, of Everly, Iowa; twenty-one grandchildren; forty-four great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Vernon and Suzanne Winterhof, of Aurelia; a sister-in-law, Elna, and her husband, Kenneth Keehn, of Hampton, Iowa; and a brother-in-law, Arnold, and his wife, Lois Stratmann, of Hampton; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services for Orville E. Winterhof, 95, of Cherokee, formerly of Aurelia, will be Saturday, May 27, 2017, at 1:30 P.M., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Aurelia with Pastor Larry Lemke officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Aurelia. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the church with the family present. The Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia is overseeing the arrangements.
