Charles F. Witter
July 4, 1930 - May 7, 2017

Charles F. Witter, age 86, of Newell, Iowa, died on Sunday, May 7, 2017, at the Newell Good Samaritan Society.

Charles Frederick Witter was born on July 4, 1930, in Newell, Iowa. He grew up in Newell and graduated from Newell High School in 1948. On June 4, 1948, he married Lorraine White at the Methodist Church in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with three children: Roger, Linda, and Laurie.

After their wedding, Charlie started working on a farm and later as a custodian at the Newell School. Next, he worked at Walt’s Skelly Service before taking it over as Witter’s Skelly Service, a gas station and bulk truck operator. He owned and operated that business for eighteen years. After selling it, he worked for Farm Service for fifteen years as a bulk truck operator. Lastly, he managed the Newell Golf Course for eight years.

Extensively involved in the Newell community, Charlie served as a volunteer firefighter for the Newell Fire Department for fifty-five years. After two years as Assistant Chief, he became the Chief for twenty-three years. A Grand Marshall of the Newell Pride Days Parade, he received an award recognizing him as the Newell Volunteer Firefighter of the Year. In addition, he received the Governor’s Volunteer Award. Moreover, he served as the mayor of Newell for twelve years as well as with the Newell Chamber of Commerce. After the Newell United Methodist Church closed, however, Charlie joined the Varina United Methodist Church.

Among his favorite pastimes, Charlie included hunting and golfing. An avid Minnesota Vikings, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Iowa State Cyclone fan, he, also, enjoyed attending the firemen’s convention, dancing, playing cards with the other members in his card club, and competing in golf tournaments. Most of all, however, Charlie was a loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Bonnie Witter, of Newell, Iowa; his children: Roger (Lynn) Witter, of Davenport, Iowa, Linda (Garry) Hill, of Spencer, Iowa, and Laurie (Allen) Bland, of Newell, Iowa; his grandchildren: Jeff Stormer (significant other, Terri Bell), Michael (Tracy) Witter, Cheryl Hill, William Hill (significant other, Corrina Painter), Stephanie (Chad) Bals, and Aaron (Christina) and KayLynn Bland; his great grandchildren: Madison, Brittany, Sydney, Brett, Brooklyn, Breeana, Jaida, Kinley, Haley, Thad, Rebekah, Emma, Carter, and Audrey; and his sisters-in-law, Violet Kuhn and Martha White; as well as extended family members and friends. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law, Elmer and Stacy White; and his brothers: Edward Jr., Herbert, and Robert.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 12, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the Newell Fire Station. Burial will follow at a later date in the Newell Cemetery. Visitation will take place Thursday, May 11, 2017, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is overseeing the arrangements.
